Denver Broncos free agent wide receiver Eddie Royal is a wanted man. Several teams, including the Washington Redskins, are in pursuit of him. While he has a bunch of options, it looks like Royal could end up landing in San Diego with the Chargers.
The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee reports that Royal is currently taking a physical with the team, and that once the Chargers get a player to visit San Diego, they rarely leave.
If the 25-year-old wideout does end up with the Chargers, it would be a great fit. Royal would immediately slide in as the team's fourth wide receiver and punt returner.
San Diego would use a rotation of Malcom Floyd, Robert Meachem, Vincent Brown and Royal, and given Floyd's injury history, the team needs to secure a solid fourth option in the passing game. Along with Brown, who the team really likes, Royal would give the team another young option in the passing game.
Royal did very well under Mike Shanahan as a rookie, and Norv Turner could probably find a way to use him.
During his rookie season, the Virginia Tech product hauled in 91 passes for 980 yards and five touchdowns. After that, things dropped off, as he had just 37 catches in 2009, 59 in 2010 and 19 in 2011. But he has been successful in the NFL and could be a valuable asset if used correctly.
With the receiver market thinning out quickly, it's not surprising that Royal is getting so much attention. I don't expect him to be available much longer, even if he does leave San Diego without a deal.
