Cincinnati Bengals Free Agency: Players on Bengals Radar After First Day

Matt GrayJun 5, 2018

The first afternoon of free agency is in the books, and there have been a number of splashes around the league. However, seemingly sticking to their age-old logic, the Cincinnati Bengals are yet to ink any of the high profile names on the market.

That being said, despite the slow start, the Bengals have attracted a number of players who are scheduled to visit in the coming days.

As well as Pittsburgh and Dallas, tight end Kellen Davis of the Chicago Bears is due to visit Cincy. The 26-year-old stands at a lofty 6'7". At 262 pounds, he is an impressive blocker. The Bengals may be looking for an affordable backup behind Jermaine Gresham. Davis would be a solid No. 2.

Both Donald Lee and Bo Scaife put in commendable performances behind Gresham in 2011, but both are free agents and re-signing them could be more costly than inking Davis.

Thursday will see Aaron Ross, cornerback for the Super Bowl champion Giants, make the trip to PBS. He has struggled with a nagging hamstring injury over the last few years but began to play to his first-round pick status in 2011, bagging four INTs for the year.

The Bengals defensive backs struggled in 2011 following the departure of Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall's season-ending Achilles injury. Pacman Jones and Kelly Jennings are now free agents, which puts Cincy in dire need of depth at the position. Ross may not be a starter at this point, but with the Bengals likely to address the position in the draft, he won't be asked to be.

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer has also reported that the Bengals have "considerable interest" in Miami DE Kendall Langford. Pro Football Talk have confirmed that Langford will visit Cincy on Thursday.

The Bengals are in a difficult position when it comes to defensive ends. Both Frostee Rucker and Jon Fanene want to test the open market, which forces Cincy to look elsewhere. Last season's rotation on defense was one of the team's strongest facets. Therefore, with two ends ready to look elsewhere, Marvin Lewis needs to find a solution—fast.

The defense rediscovered its identity in 2011 and embraced the new faces that joined the lineup. However, it's hard to tell how they will react to yet another year of significant change with a number of other lineman cropping up in free agency.

Interest in Langford comes as a direct result of this situation. He is by no means an elite rusher, but does bring the pressure on a consistent enough basis to allow him to fit well within the Bengals rotation system.
