Tiger Woods Has No Shot at Catching Bubba Watson at Cadillac Championship

Jessica MarieJun 7, 2018

Entering Sunday's final round at the Cadillac Championship, Tiger Woods trails eight shots behind Bubba Watson, and the odds of him catching up aren't looking good.

On Saturday, Woods lost any momentum he had going, shooting a four-under 68. Making up eight shots in one round is about as likely as the Celtics trading the entire Big Three plus Rajon Rondo before the NBA trade deadline. Of course, if anyone can do it, it's Tiger—he has been known to make up seven shots in one round.

Woods struggled on Saturday, even after starting off with three birdies and standing strong at four-under through six holes. He pulled a two-iron over the green on the par-5 eighth hole and took a penalty shot on the par five 12th hole for a bogey.

On Friday, Woods played bogey-free and shot a 67 in poor conditions, telling the Associated Press, "This is the highest I could have shot today, for sure."

Now, with one round remaining and Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Watson all looming ahead of him, the chances of Woods making a massive run in the final round—where, as of late, he's struggled with mental lapses and mistakes—are not looking good. Not with all of the talent staring him down, daring him to catch up.

Still, even if Woods inevitably plays to a mediocre finish on Sunday, the news isn't all bad. Woods is improving, or at least Steve Stricker thinks so.

Stricker told the Boston Herald's Dave Hyde, "You can tell he's got a lot of confidence about him right now. He's looking like himself again. All the putts, even the ones he's missing, are looking good."

Woods' competition knows they have to keep a watch out for him to come surging back—just not this weekend. That surge isn't coming on Sunday, so for now, Watson & Co. can rest easy.
