Germany vs France: Loss Proves Tim Wiese Not Worthy of Starting Position

Michael DixonMar 1, 2012

While Germany was not significantly outplayed in their international friendly against France, they did lose the match. In Germany, that is a sign that something needs to be changed, and that something needs to be the goalie.

Prior to Wednesday's clash, the Sporting Life had this to say about Niese starting in net for the German squad:

"

Tim Wiese will be given the chance to put the pressure on Germany number one Manuel Neuer when he starts in goal for Wednesday night's international friendly against France.

Wiese has not been on the winning side in his five previous appearances for Germany, but he will get the chance to end that negative run in Bremen.

The problem is that Wiese effectively put no pressure on Neuer. As a matter of fact, he did the exact opposite, and that winless streak is now at six.

The game was actually played more or less evenly between the two squads. The numbers tell you all that you need to know there.

 Germany   France
Shots   1415
Shots on Goal   56
Time of Possession   49%51%

When you have that close of a match, the home squad should at least be able to manage a draw. When that doesn't happen, something needs to change.

Fortunately, it's easy for Germany in this case, as the necessary change only means returning to the normal starter.

The fact of the matter is that the two teams played an even game. One goalkeeper allowed one goal, which came at the very end and effectively meant nothing. The other allowed two, at home. That tells you all that you need to know.

Neuer is clearly the German club's top goalkeeper. If he is kept out of action for whatever reason at the EuroCup, Germany is going to have a hard time realistically competing. France is a good squad, but they do not have the experience in the current system like Germany does.

A match between the two in Germany should have resulted in, at best, a tie for the French. The fact that it was an easy victory for France, despite even statistics, is a sign that the German team needs to change things up from that match by the time the non-friendly's are played.

How far Germany goes in those matches remains to be seen, but they will only go as far as Manuel Neuer takes them. Tim Wiese is not the man for the job.
