England vs Holland: English Fans Shouldn't Take Loss Too Seriously
England's 3-2 loss to Holland must have been emotionally exhausting for fans.
After nearly an hour of play, neither side scored. Then Holland scored two fairly close to one another which stood for some time. The English went on a furious rally late to tie the game, and after all of that, the defense inexplicably got lax and allowed Arjen Robben to score the game-winning goal (and his second of the match) in stoppage time.
Whew—I need a nap after writing that.
But English fans shouldn't fret over the loss or read too deeply into it. In my opinion, this was a meaningless contest.
The interim manager, Stuart Pearce, is likely to be replaced by Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp before June's Euros. The captain, Scott Parker, might be handing over the armband to the man many thought would wear it after John Terry was stripped of it, Steven Gerrard.
To say that the past month or so has been a bit crazy surrounding the national team after manager Fabio Capello resigned following the Terry incident would be an understatement.
And hell, Wayne Rooney didn't play in the game.
The fact that the squad showed some resiliency and mounted the comeback they did should be looked at positively, even if the late goal to Robben was inexcusable.
But all in all, this game should be looked at for what it was: a friendly for a team in a bit of upheaval and missing several key players.
In other words, an irrelevant result in the long haul.
