The San Jose Sharks must resist the temptation to go for the big trade-market prize Rick Nash. The price tag is simply too high.

The Sharks are certainly in a position to be buyers in this market, they just shouldn't be buying Nash. The Sharks currently have the third-best record in the Western Conference. They are talented team and in a real position to make a run at the Stanley Cup.

However, they can address needs buy going after players without as steep a price tag.

To their credit, early indications are that they realize this.

The Rumors

Brian Compton relayed the following report on NHL.com.

NHL Network hockey insider Darren Dreger reported Tuesday night that the Sharks are a strong contender for Nash's services. Sources have told Dreger that the Columbus Blue Jackets wanted Logan Couture in return, but that was quickly rejected by Sharks general manager Doug Wilson.

This is certainly a believable rumor. The Sharks are wise to show interest in Nash to gauge the waters, and the Blue Jackets are shrewd to shoot for the moon.

Why the Sharks Must Avoid Nash

Sharks fans should be happy to hear that San Jose has already displayed they are not willing to pay any price to acquire him.

With all the interest in Nash, the Blue Jackets are bound to find a team that will overpay for him. The Sharks just have to make sure it is not them.

They have a strong nucleus. They don't need a complete roster overhaul. They need to focus on adding to that roster without disrupting their core.
