Kevin Youkilis: 5 Teams That'll Fight over Him If He's a 2013 Free Agent
Kevin Youkilis has been a key part of the Boston Red Sox's lineup for years, but he may find himself switching teams after the 2012 season. In an interview with WEEI, Youkilis said that he is not thinking about the Red Sox picking up his option for 2013. Rather he is worried about going out there and performing everyday.
A number of teams will be willing to fight over Youkilis if he does become a free agent. He has the ability to play both first base and third base and that versatility increases the number of teams that will be chasing after him if he hits the open market.
Toronto Blue Jays
If Kevin Youkilis does become a free agent in 2013, then he might not need to leave the American League East. The Toronto Blue Jays have shown that they are willing to spend cash to pick up good players and they could target the Red Sox star.
Edwin Encarnacion will be a free agent after this season. This means that the Blue Jays could move Adam Lind to the DH spot which would open up first base for Youkilis.
Mat Gamel has some big shoes to fill in Milwaukee as he attempts to replace Prince Fielder as the Brewers' first baseman. If Gamel falters in 2012, then the Brewers' could look outside the organization for a first baseman.
They may turn to Kevin Youkilis to fill their hole at the corner. He would be an outstanding fit in the Brewers' lineup if he was slotted in ahead of Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez.
Todd Helton will be in the last year of his contract with the Colorado Rockies in 2013 and he is only due $5 million. Colorado does not have a replacement for him in their minor league system.
Kevin Youkilis could spend 2013 at third base for the Rockies. The following season when Helton's contract is up and Nolan Arenado is ready to take over at third base, Youkilis could switch corners.
Theo Epstein is very familiar with Kevin Youkilis from his years with the Boston Red Sox. It is possible that Epstein could try and convince Youkilis to come to the Chicago Cubs if he becomes a free agent in 2013.
The Cubs' potential pursuit of Youkilis would depend on how Josh Vitters continues to develop in 2012. If it does not look like he is a viable solution at third base then Chicago could certainly make a run at Youkilis.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The new owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers will likely be willing to spend a good amount of money to improve the team next winter. One of the positions that the Dodgers can certainly improve at is third base.
Kevin Youkilis would be a great player for the Dodgers. In addition to his abilities on the field, Youkilis would also provide them with veteran leadership.
