Welcome back for another round of live English football commentary here on Bleacher Report with me, Karl Matchett.
You'd be forgiven for thinking you'd gone back in time to a week ago today as football throws up one of its quirky moments this weekend. Indeed, Sunderland and Arsenal will face off in the FA Cup fifth round, just one week after the two sides met in the Premier League.
While the Gunners came out on top on that occasion thanks to a late Thierry Henry winner—his final goal during his loan spell from the US—Arsenal have since travelled to Milan in the Champions League, where they were smashed 4-0 in the first leg of the knockout stages.
Sunderland, meanwhile, have had a free week in which to prepare for this game as they bid to continue their renaissance under Martin O'Neill.
Stick right here with me for all the latest news in the buildup to this game, including team news. We'll then have all the action live as it happens, plus the best postmatch analysis.
Don't forget to get involved by leaving your comments below, as always.
That's it for me, Karl Matchett, and the live text today, thanks to all for joining us here and for all your comments below.
I'll be back next week with more Premiership live commentary on what will be a huge week of league football, not least for Arsenal with their North London derby against Spurs.
Stay tuned to my Bleacher Report article feed over the next hour or so for all the best post-match reaction, including the ratings of the Gunners' players today.
Thanks again and see you soon!
What do we think? Is Arsenal's season over?
They still have to fight for that fourth spot of course in the Premier League, but in terms of real success—trophy wins—they are out of it, four for four, and we are only in mid-February.
Sunderland, on the other hand, are on a massive upwards trajectory under Martin O'Neill and can look forward to the final third of the season with much to play for, including, on the evidence of this match, a real chance of winning the FA Cup.
Arsene Wenger will point to yet more dreadful misfortune with injuries; they lost Francis Coquelin inside the opening ten minutes of the match before Aaron Ramsey and Sebastian Squillaci both went off early in the second half.
However, the true facts of the game show a dreadful Arsenal defence and a lack of movement and creativity up front.
Sunderland worked much, much harder than their counterparts and, ultimately, took their chances.
Howard Webb calls time on a really good FA Cup match, sending Sunderland through to the last eight.
Arsenal, however, will endure a seventh successive season without winning a trophy and the pressure will continue to grow on Arsene Wenger as a result.
Both teams contributed heavily to the game as a spectacle, but in truth, for all Arsenal's good approach play in the first half, they never threatened to score with any regularity and Sunderland made sure Simon Mignolet was largely untroubled with a terrifically hard-working display.
Keiran Richardson got the all-important first goal with a deflected strike from the edge of the box in the final six minutes of the first half, before a counter-attack from the home side led to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain putting through his own net with 77 minutes on the clock.
As for the Man of the Match, you could almost take your pick from the midfield five from the home side, who were all magnificent, but I will just about edge it for captain Lee Cattermole ahead of the again-impressive James McClean.
Full time at the Stadium of Light:
Sunderland 2 Arsenal 0
ARSENAL ARE KNOCKED OUT OF THE FA CUP, SUNDERLAND PROGRESS TO THE QUARTER FINALS.
93 mins
van Persie hits the wall with his free kick and McClean absolutely wallops the ball clear....and...
92 mins
Still Arsenal come forward, but Gervinho's cross is met by a home shirt inside the six yard box.
Colback nudges over Rosicky for another free kick, which van Persie will line up, but with less than 60 seconds to go, Arsenal are almost out of time.
90 mins
van Persie tries to fashion an opening before Vermaelen smashes a shot in which is blocked.
Arteta latches onto the rebound, but blazes the ball well, well over the bar.
Three minutes of added time to be played.
88 mins
Sunderland substitute:
Frazier Campbell comes on for Stephane Sessegnon, who has led the line admirably today.
87 mins
Arsenal do keep trying to come forward but Sunderland clear the ball, and clear the ball, and clear the ball.
O'Shea, Bardsley, Cattermole—each of them make good interceptions, helping their team repel the ball and preserve the two goal lead.
On the break, Sessegnon tries to feed McClean in the middle but Sagna gets back to make the challenge.
84 mins
Rosicky gets forward with the ball at his feet and feeds a pass into Robin van Persie, inside the area—but he can't control his shot, and it skies over the bar.
Arsenal looking a dejected and defeated side right now.
83 mins
Oxlade-Chamberlain feeds Theo Walcott in the box, but he is offside.
Walcott has had no effect whatsoever since coming on half an hour ago.
81 mins
Sagna, on a yellow card, slides into a tackle by his own corner flag and commits a foul on McClean. Free kick, but no second yellow.
Larsson's free kick is won by Turner but Fabianski makes himself big enough to make some kind of block and allow his team to clear.
80 mins
Have Arsenal got anything left to give?
They need two goals in the last ten minutes to avoid exiting the FA Cup and, effectively, the Champions League within the space of three days.
Never mind Arsenal, it's Sunderland who have looked dangerous on the break all game, and so it proves again.
Sunderland win the ball off Oxlade-Chamberlain on the edge of their own box, break with pace and Sessegnon blazes past a defender, feeds Larsson to his right—and his shot hits the post, before ricocheting into the net off the back-tracking Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is unlucky.
Sunderland aren't though—they have been two goals better than Arsenal today.
GOAL!!!!
Sunderland 2 Arsenal 0
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, own goal, 77 mins
75 mins
Let's be quite clear then:
Arsenal have 15 minutes or so to score a goal, or their season is effectively over.
And right now their attacking intent, rather like an anorexic pancake trapped under a grand piano, is looking flat.
Very flat.
74 mins
Craig Gardner becomes the latest player to go into the book for pulling back Rosicky in midfield.
Another free kick, another chance to send forward more men...but Vermaelen's header is weak, though on target, and Mignolet makes an easy save.
72 mins
Arteta finds Gervinho on the left side of the penalty area, and the Ivorian tries to make space to cross—but can only flash it behind for a goal kick.
Very disappointing display from Gervinho on his return to the Arsenal team.
70 mins
For the millionth time this game, Arsenal find themselves doubled-up upon in midfield.
This time, Rosicky turns away from McClean but has no answer to the immediate second challenge which comes in from Colback.
Very frustrated figures all around this ground in blue.
69 mins
Craig Gardner strides through midfield and, encouraged by the crowd, shoots from distance.
He doesn't get hold of it properly though and the ball bounces wide of the far post.
Not quite as well-hit as his looping volley last month, shall we say.
67 mins
Arsenal try down the right, then through the centre—but they can find no way through the massed Sunderland ranks in midfield, with Cattermole, Colback and Gardner getting through tremendous amounts of work.
64 mins
It was close.
van Persie slid it along the ground and Bardsley got the merest touch on the ball to send it flashing wide for a corner—which Mignolet takes in the air with authority.
On the counter, Larsson nudges over Rosicky inside the Arsenal penalty box and concedes a free kick.
63 mins
van Persie wanted a penalty as he thinks he was being held down in the box as he tried to jump, but Arsenal only have a free kick instead.
Larsson is yellow carded for a late siding tackle, and the free kick is on the right side of the area, about 25 yards from goal.
