NBA All Star Game 2013: Why Houston Is Terrible Choice to Host Clash

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

The city of Houston will be chosen to host the 2013 NBA All-Star Game, according to Pro Basketball Talk.

This is a terrible choice by the NBA since the Rockets hosted the game just six years ago, and there are many more deserving franchises who should host before Houston gets another turn.

This is the third time since 1989, when the NBA All-Star Game was played at Houston's old Astrodome, that the city has hosted the event.

How can the league justify giving Houston the All-Star game three times in the last 25 years when several teams haven't hosted the game once during that time.

Houston now becomes the fourth city, joining Los Angeles, Orlando and Phoenix as cities that have hosted the All-Star Game at least twice since 1989.

There are three cities that deserve this game way more than Houston, and they are Boston, Detroit and Chicago.

The city of Boston hasn't hosted the NBA All-Star Game since 1964. The fact that the Celtics repeatedly get past over to host the event is a major slap in the face to the most successful franchise in league history. The Celtics are a model franchise with a relatively new building yet they still haven't hosted an All-Star Game in more than four decades.

Chicago hosted the All-Star Game in 1988 but haven't gotten it again since, despite winning six championships since then, plus the fact they are going to be a top-tier team for many years into the future with the reigning MVP Derrick Rose.

Detroit is another model franchise and the city could really use an economic boost that the All-Star Game could provide since that area of Michigan has been hit hard by the recent struggles of the economy.

I cannot wait to hear the league reveal it's reasons for choosing Houston to host next year's All-Star Game. Choosing a city to host the event for the third time in the last 25 years is a major slap in the face to the many other much more deserving teams.

The NBA's choice for this year's All-Star Game is also terrible. Orlando hosted the game in 1992 and they will host the event later this month.

I understand the Magic built a brand new arena and that the league likes to reward teams who do that with All-Star Games, and while I think that's a good idea, there's no reason to give them an All-Star Game before everyone else gets a turn.

Where is Memphis' All-Star Game? What about Indiana and Milwaukee's All-Star Game?

All three of those teams are much more deserving than Orlando or Houston. Memphis has never hosted the event, Indiana hasn't since 1985 and Milwaukee hasn't since 1977.

The NBA has made an enormous mistake by once again not giving cities like Indianapolis, Chicago, Boston, and Detroit, all of which are real basketball towns, the recognition they deserve by awarding them the All-Star Game.

Instead, the league has given the event to Houston who has absolutely no business hosting the game. None at all.

As if we needed any more reason to think NBA All-Star weekend is a complete joke, the league has now given basketball fans even more reasons to forget about this boring, poorly run, unexciting event.
