MIA Middle Finger: Hypocrisy of Political Correctness Rears Its Ugly Head Again
When British artist MIA flipped off the camera during the halftime performance with Madonna at the Super Bowl, she was not breaking any laws.
Yet, judging from the hypocritical rhetoric oozing from the great people of this nation, you would think she had been advocating drugs or committing some heinous act live on stage in front of 110 million people.
MIA gave the finger.
It’s an act that happens in PG-13 movies and in every middle school in the United States. We all need to take a big step back and stop taking ourselves so seriously.
University of California Professor Ira P. Robbins is reporting about the legality of giving the finger on television:
"Although the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC” or “Commission”)—the agency charged with regulating the broadcasting industry—has not explicitly prohibited the middle finger gesture on television, broadcasters almost always choose to censor it themselves.
"
Now that people can take off their rose-colored glasses and realize that she and the network can’t be held legally liable, we have to address the subject of parents complaining about their kids seeing that.
Just like Jerry Springer or any of those types of shows on television, there are groups of people that think they know what is good for America. The Parents Television Council is one of those groups.
The Parents Television Council has released a statement on the incident:
"It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer…performers who have based their careers on shock profanity and titillation…Either the NFL and NBC will take immediate steps to hold those accountable for this offensive material in front of a hundred million Americans, or they will feebly sit back and do nothing.
"
These are the same people that sat through every one of these sex-filled commercials during the Super Bowl and didn’t say a word. I would like to see the people in the PTC come down off their high horse and explain to me why what MIA did was any worse than the actions in the GoDaddy.com commercial.
Believing that this is something new, or something that every child over the age of eight or nine hasn’t seen before is naïve and hypocritical.
If the lessons and morals you want a child to carry are shaken by a singer flipping the camera off, you need to re-evaluate the way the child is being raised. Instead of blaming everyone for screwing up the kids, people should just do the best job they can to protect their own.
All of the political correctness that has been shoved down our throats over the years is because of groups like this that think they know what people should be able to see and what they should be blocked from. With all due respect, people like this need to worry about their own dysfunctional lives and let people raise their kids however they want.
Mia flipped a camera off. Not a big deal. Get over it.
