B/R MMA Official Rankings for February: Top 10 Flyweights in MMA

0 of 10

The UFC introduces the flyweight division next month in Australia, headlined by names like Ian McCall, Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson and Joseph Benavidez.

It is the second straight year the UFC is introducing a new weight class into the promotion, and the tournament will settle who will be the first UFC flyweight champion.

This division's rankings is the most mixed group of fighters ever. While in other rankings you have nine or ten fighters from the UFC, here it is more a mixture of top talent in the 125 pound division.

These rankings are the combined effort of some of Bleacher Report MMA's best writers, as we continue to try to provide you with the best content on the web.

Mamoru Yamaguchi has earned the nickname "The Illest Afro in Asia," but outside of his gimmick hair, he has built an impressive career at flyweight.

14 of his 26 wins come via some sort of stoppage, and the Japanese flyweight also holds a win over Yasuhiro Urushitani.

Yamaguchi has not fought since his decision loss last August.

Yasuhiro Urushitani will be part of the first ever UFC flyweight tournament and faces a tough challenge in his first UFC fight.

Not only will it be his first trip into the octagon, but it will also be his first trip out of Asia.

Will Urushitani be able to overcome the jitters and get used to the cage to upset the favored Joseph Benavidez?

4. Jussier Da Silva

Most recent fight: 1st round submission victory versus Rodrigo Santos (Fort MMA- Fort MMA Championships 1)

Jussier da Silva fights all over the world and defends his Shooto South American flyweight belt.

The Brazilian flyweight has compiled a nearly flawless record, with his only loss coming against former Tachi palace Fights flyweight champion Ian McCall by unanimous decision.

Outside of that, da Silva has notched wins over Mamoru Yamaguchi and Shinichi Kojima.

3. Demetrious Johnson

Most recent fight: Unanimous decision loss versus Dominick Cruz (UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson)

Next fight: versus Ian McCall (UFC on FX 2)

    Previous ranking: 3rd

Demetrious Johnson gets his second crack at UFC gold in the last year when he faces Ian McCall in the semi-finals of the UFC's flyweight tournament.

Johnson had an awesome career at bantamweight and finally earned a shot at Dominick Cruz.

Unfortunately for Johnson, he was beaten in the end and now joins Joseph Benavidez as the second top fighter from the bantamweight division to drop to flyweight.

2. Ian McCall

9 of 10

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 11-2

Most recent fight: 3rd round submission victory versus Darrell Montague (Tachi Palace Fights 10)

    Previous ranking: 1st

Ian McCall is the former Tachi Palace Fights flyweight champion and vacated that title to come over and compete for the first ever UFC flyweight title.

McCall is a former WEC bantamweight and has even fought the likes of Charlie Valencia and Dominick Cruz.

The debate has begun: Who is the better fighter between Benavidez, Johnson and McCall? Only time will tell.

1. Joseph Benavidez

10 of 10

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 15-2

Most recent fight: Unanimous decision victory versus Eddie Wineland (UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle)

Next fight: versus Yasuhiro Urushitani (UFC on FX 2)

    Previous ranking: 2nd

Joseph Benavidez has spent the last couple of years as one of the top bantamweights in the world.

Fighting some of the top names in the division and earning a title shot, Benavidez now moves down to a weight class where he isn't the smaller fighter.

Benavidez now gets a second shot at UFC gold and could very well be the first UFC flyweight champion.
