Matt Brown may not be the best fighter in UFC—as his 13-11 record would suggest—but there is little doubt that he is one of the most entertaining. Brown continued that trend on Saturday night as he knocked out the promising Chris Cope in the second round of a welterweight battle.
In 24 career fights, Brown has gone the distance only three times, so more often than not his fights are going to end in a knockout or submission. Brown isn't the savviest of fighters as he often gets caught in precarious positions, but he is certainly one of the toughest.
Brown and Cope were engaged in a rough-and-tumble bout, and Brown ended it as he pounded Cope's face in while they were in a grounded position. The referee had to stop the fight and Cope was left dazed and confused as he had been knocked silly by Brown.
While Brown may never be a champion or even a contender, he is the type of fighter that UFC needs. Too often there are boring fights with a bunch of clutching and grabbing. Brown simply doesn't allow that to happen as it is almost a sure bet that he is going score an amazing win or go down in a blaze of glory.
His punching power makes him a very dangerous opponent, so he is a great gateway fight for competitors who are looking to make the jump to the main-event scene. Brown has been through a lot of battles and he has seen it all, so beating him is definitely an accomplishment.
Brown can be a great asset for UFC as he can truly sift through the fighters to figure out which are legitimate and which aren't. It's safe to say that he proved on Saturday night that Cope isn't ready for the big time in the least.
Because of Brown's "go-big-or-go-home" attitude, he is the perfect opponent for hot-shot young fighters. If a fighter is smart and has some power or some good submission holds, then they are going to beat Brown.
If they're complacent or lazy, though, then Brown has the tools to beat a lot of people.
Brown is always going to be an undercard fighter, but he is the type of guy that fans want to see. There is never a dull moment with Brown and that is why he is so popular.
Say what you will about Brown being a punching bag, but he can dish it out as well. That makes him one of the most exciting fighters in UFC.
