One of the easiest ways to gamble on the Super Bowl without knowing anything about the New York Giants or New England Patriots is trying your luck in a Super Bowl squares game.

Not familiar?

Everybody puts down cash in exchange for a spot on a 10-by-10 grid. The score at the end of each quarter will provide four different winners. For example, if the score is 7-3 Giants at the end of the first quarter, the person with the seven on the Giants axis and three on the Patriots wins that round.

So how can you get a leg up?

If given the opportunity to pick your own squares, jump on zero right away. During the regular season and 10 playoff games (1,064 quarters), a score ending in zero came up in 592 times.

Next up was seven (471) and three (367). By no surprise, two came in dead last with 42.

What’s the best combination to land? 7-0 (151 times). Combine that with 3-0, 0-0, 7-3 and 7-4 and you have the winning combination 46 percent of the time.

What combinations didn’t come up a single time? 2-2, 2-9, 5-5 and 8-8.

So what exactly is the most likely scenario? Casey Frushour of the blog caseyshead.com has it all figured out:

Based on the last four years of data, Super Bowl history and this year’s competing teams, I’ll go with quarter scores of NE 7-0, NE 14-10, NE 21-20 and NYG 30-27 in overtime..

Of course there is no exact science to the game, but it allows you to be engaged throughout regardless of how bad one team is beating the other.

Good luck and avoid those twos!
