Now that all of the recruits have signed their letter and faxed it to their team, it is time to start analyzing. According to many websites, Alabama has the top recruiting class in the nation. They have 28 total commitments and at least 19 of those are four or five stars. Nick Saban and Alabama fans are hoping many of the new freshmen can come in and make an impact right away, so the Tide can make a run at defending the national title.
With many different rankings, every website seems to make it clear that Alabama's top three recruits are Landon Collins, Eddie Williams, and Reggie Ragland. That is why I will debate on who, out of these three, will make the biggest impact next year.
Landon Collins surprised everyone, including his mom, when he announced that he will play football at Alabama instead of LSU. Landon Collins is a top safety and has big play ability. He can read the quarterback's eyes and break on the ball to make an interception. He has the speed to drop back and run with the top receivers in the SEC. He also is not afraid to run up in the box and lay a big time hit on the runner. Expect Collins to be making big plays as freshman. However, Collins will be late on learning Alabama's defensive schemes so that will be a major setback for him.
Eddie Williams is listed as an athlete, but he should play wide receiver or safety in college. Listed as 6'4" and 210 lbs, Williams has a huge body frame so he has great size to play either position. Alabama lost their top four receivers this year, so they will be looking for someone to step in. Williams should take that opportunity to play receiver and become best friends with A.J. McCarron. Eddie Williams should play the same role Julio Jones played when he was at Alabama.
Alabama lost many linebackers to the draft and graduation, so they will need more physical, fast linebackers. Ragland is huge, listed at 6'3" 245 lbs, so he is certainly big enough to play linebacker in the SEC. Watching Ragland's videos, this kid should be a star at Alabama. He has the physical tools, but he needs to learn the schemes and blitzes to earn some playing time. Nico Johnson and Trey Depriest should be the captains of the defense, but Ragland has the potential to be a star in the SEC.
After reviewing these three players, I have to think Eddie Williams will have the biggest impact in 2012. I think with his big body he can step in right away and start the first game for the Tide. He has the speed and great hands to play the position. Landon Collins will be very good at Alabama, but he will need more time to learn the defense. The same goes for Reggie Ragland. He just needs time, and he will also be competing with Nico Johnson, Trey Depreist, and C.J. Mosely for playing time.
Please comment below to say who you think will have the biggest impact in 2012.
