Manchester United Transfer News: 10 Deadline Day Targets for Reds

1 of 11

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been one of the shrewdest operators in the transfer window in the world and has made several superb transfers which have helped the team win trophies over the years.

While any big transfer at this stage of the transfer window could be considered as unexpected, it cannot be ruled out, especially with a manager like Ferguson, who has made several surprise signings in the past.

This January transfer window has been relatively quiet with regard to the Premiership, but with time still left in the window, there could be some clubs who could splash the money.

The Red Devils could also spend the money to acquire one or two big signings before the close of the window in order to add both depth to their injury-ravaged squad and add quality in order to beat Manchester City to the league title.

Wesley Sneijder (Inter Milan)

2 of 11

Wesley Sneijder was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, but ultimately, he continued to stay with Inter Milan, with United not able to seal a move for the Dutchman.

Sneijder is a world-class midfielder, who would undoubtedly improve the quality of the Manchester United midfield. Though Paul Scholes has considerably strengthened their midfield, the veteran will not be able to play every game because of his age and is a stop-gap solution only.

Sneijder could probably play in a more advanced role and will provide great service to the strikers, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck or Javier Hernandez.

The only reason why Sir Alex Ferguson could be reluctant to move for the Dutchman is because he is already 28 years old and will command a big transfer fee as well as wages. Also, with Tom Cleverley showing that he is a promising talent, Ferguson could show his belief in the youngster, who has been unfortunate with injuries this season.

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

3 of 11

Mats Hummels is one of the best defenders in the world, and the German international could be targeted by Manchester United because of various injuries to their back line.

With Nemanja Vidic injured for the long term and Rio Ferdinand not at his best due to various injury problems, a young defender like Hummels would be an excellent signing for the Red Devils. The centre back is technically good on the ball and could provide the solidity required at the back.

He is a long-term prospect for the Red Devils because he is a player who will probably improve further under a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson. However, Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp would be keen to retain him, especially with them fighting a very close battle for the Bundesliga title this season.

Also, with the Euro tournament in the summer, it is quite unlikely that he will change clubs in the January transfer window.

Cheick Tiote (Newcastle United)

4 of 11

Cheick Tiote has been one of the best signings for Newcastle United in recent years, as he has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the league. The Ivory Coast international has adjusted very well to the Premiership since joining the Magpies and has relished the physicality of the Premier League.

He is good on the ball and displays complete commitment for the team.

His partnership with Yohan Cabaye in central midfield has been one of the main reasons why Newcastle have looked quite strong this season.

Though Alan Pardew would not like to lose one of his key midfielders, Newcastle have sold important players in the past if the right money was offered, and Manchester United, who have been linked with the midfielder, do have a chance of signing him before the end of the window.

Christian Eriksen (Ajax)

5 of 11

Christian Eriksen is one of the most talented youngsters in world football and is currently a vital player for Ajax.

The Denmark international has a bright future ahead of him. He can play in an advanced midfield role or also on the wings and will certainly improve the depth and quality of the team.

Eriksen might take time to adjust, because he is playing in a less physical league currently, but he has the talent to be an immense player for a Premiership club.

Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the best when it comes to identifying young talents and guiding them to realize their best. Eriksen has the quality needed to play at the highest level and could further develop under a manager like Ferguson.

Eden Hazard (Lille)

6 of 11

Eden Hazard is one of the most highly rated attacking players, and he has been linked with a number of clubs, including Manchester United, in the past.

The Lille midfielder is immensely talented and played a key role in the club winning the French league title last season. Hazard, who is still only 21 years old, has a bright future ahead of him and has the quality to make the difference for the team.

According to this report in the Daily Mail, Hazard said that he will finish the season with Lille, but England is the most likely destination for him next season.

However, there still exists the possibility that Manchester United could make a bid for the Belgian international, considering that both Nani and Ashley Young are injured, and Hazard is interested in a move to the Premier League.

If United can agree on a fee with Lille, then there still exists the possibility of him moving in the January transfer window.

Milos Krasic (Juventus)

7 of 11

Milos Krasic is another player who could possibly be targeted by Manchester United before the end of the transfer window and has been linked with the Red Devils in the past.

The Serbian international is quite talented and could be a good addition to the team, especially if he is on loan. With Nani and Young injured, signing Krasic would be a good deal for Manchester United.

Krasic is a quality player who could be a good signing for the Red Devils if he adjusts well to the team. He has unfortunately not played regularly at Juventus under manager Antonio Conte and could be looking for a move away from the club.

Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo)

8 of 11

Lucas Moura is one of the most talented players currently playing in Brazil, and he has been very impressive for his club, Sao Paulo.

He is very highly rated, and they will look to hold on to him as long as possible because he is a player who can bring trophies to the side. Lucas has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world, including the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United and could be a great addition to either side.

It is clear that he is a youngster with plenty of potential and could further develop under a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson. Ferguson has played an important role in helping several youngsters establish themselves as world-class players, right from Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes to Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

Lucas would get a great opportunity to work with one of the best managers ever, but the question is whether Manchester United are prepared to spend the money to persuade Sao Paulo to sell the midfielder.

Luka Modric (Tottenham)

9 of 11

Luka Modric is one of the best players in the Premiership and is undoubtedly a very important player for Tottenham as they look to win the Premiership for the first time in a very long time.

The Croatian midfielder was targeted by Chelsea in the summer but Spurs managed to hold on to the midfielder despite them make a big bid for signing him. However, it could be even more difficult if United also look to sign him.

It is clear that he is a player who could be a great addition to this United side, who don't have a very mobile and dynamic midfield, especially without Cleverley.

Modric could be a great addition to this side, and he is currently in prime form, influencing games regularly for Tottenham. He could be a fine replacement for the aging Paul Scholes in the United midfield, but Spurs will be very reluctant to sell the midfielder.

Shinji Kagawa (Borussia Dortmund)

10 of 11

Borussia Dortmund have done very well in the last couple of seasons under Jurgen Klopp, and it is no surprise that some of their best players have been linked with moves to various clubs during transfer windows.

Another Dortmund player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford is Shinji Kagawa, who has been one of the best signings by Klopp. Though he was an unknown player when he was signed by Dortmund, he has shown his quality at the club and has established himself as one of the vital players of the team.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Japanese attacker in the past, and he could be an excellent addition to the team. He has shown that he has the technique and creativity required to succeed at the highest level and could be an excellent signing for the Red Devils.

However, like Mats Hummels, it is quite unlikely that he will be sold in this window, but shocking signings have happened in the past, and it cannot be ruled out.

Jack Rodwell (Everton)

11 of 11

Jack Rodwell is a very talented English youngster, who has made good strides in his progress under Everton manager David Moyes.

Moyes has been instrumental in the development of several young players, including Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney. However due to plenty of financial difficulties at the club, he has been forced to sell some of the best talents at Everton before they reach their peak.

Rodwell can play in a number of positions in midfield, and with Darren Fletcher out due to illness, it could be a good signing for the Red Devils. He will not need any time to adjust to the Premiership and has the quality to be a very good player for United in the future.

Though Everton will be reluctant to sell, they could be persuaded if Manchester United meet their valuation of the midfielder.
