Kentucky Basketball: 8 Great Shot-Blockers Who Anthony Davis Will Surpass
Anthony Davis set a Kentucky freshman record for blocked shots on Tuesday night, breaking the mark (83) held previously by Melvin Turpin and matched by Andre Riddick.
With his seven most recent blocks, Davis now has 89 after only 19 games.
Kentucky will play a minimum of 14 additional games in the 2011-12 season, which will only happen if the Cats get knocked off in the opening rounds of both the SEC and NCAA tournaments.
At his current rate (4.7 blocks per game), Davis is likely to block anywhere from 150 to 200 shots this season.
Here is a list of great freshman shot-blockers who Davis figures to surpass by season's end.
Mike Gminski (Duke)
1 of 8Mike Gminski is Duke's all-time freshman shot-blocking leader with 90 in 1976-77.
Though he is not known as a big-time eraser, Gminski was ahead of Blue Devil great Shelden Williams in his freshman year
Davis is likely to move past the 6'11" center from the '70s early during Kentucky's next game (against Alabama on Jan. 21).
Shaquille O'Neal (LSU)
2 of 8Shaq sent back 115 of his opponents' shots as a Bayou Bengal frosh.
With a few good games, Davis may catch O'Neal by the end of this month.
C.J. Aiken (St. Joseph's)
3 of 8The 6'9" sophomore had 117 rejections last year and is second to Davis this season, averaging 4.3 blocks per game.
Davis will not only beat Aiken this season, but he will surpass his freshman mark as well.
Hasheem Thabeet (UConn)
4 of 8Thabeet was one of the few college players to surpass 400 blocks in his college career.
He had 118 in his first year at UConn.
But Davis has him in his sights, ready to pass him in the next four or five games.
Tim Duncan (Wake Forest)
5 of 8Tim Duncan, one of the ACC's all-time best players, had a school-record 124 blocked shots as a freshman.
Davis could pass "The Big Fundamental's" freshman count in an early February game.
Emeka Okafor (UConn)
6 of 8Okafor was an impressive defender and shot blocker right out of the gate at UConn.
He rejected 138 shots his freshman season on his way to blocking 441 in his college career.
It will take Davis until about the end of February to catch him.
Alonzo Mourning (Georgetown)
7 of 8Zo had a super-impressive 169 rejections as a freshman at Georgetown....Wow!
Right now, Davis is a little over halfway to equally Mourning's mark.
It might take AD into the SEC Tournament to catch this frontcourt warrior.
Shawn Bradley (BYU)
8 of 8Shawn Bradley only played one year at BYU. But in that single season, he blocked 177 shots....Yowza!
Davis is halfway to catching him.
This is doable, but it will take some effort.
