UFC 142 Fight Card Results: Stout Edged Out by Hometown Thiago Tavares

Dwight WakabayashiJun 7, 2018

London, Ontario's Sam "Hands of Stone" Stout probably wishes he could have had a few more seconds in his UFC 142 bout tonight against Thiago Tavares, and it might have made all the difference in the world. Stout was edged out in a razor thin, unanimous decision but had Tavares hurt in the dying seconds of the bout after a right hook and a couple of uppercuts stunned the game Brazilian.

It was too little too late as Thiago won the decision with takedowns and control in the first round, and then winning many of the exchanges on the feet in the second. Tavares cut Stout behind the ear with a strike and Stout just looked a little off in his quickness to get off.

The Canadian battled many demons coming in to this fight as it was his first ever without Shawn Tompkins in his corner and he was also in hostile territory fighting a Brazilian, but Stout came out in true style as he faced his challenge head-on and delivered a solid performance.

It wasn't the best we've ever seen from "Hands of Stone," but he certainly showed heart and should be commended. It's not always the result that is the measure of the man.

Stout seemed hesitant to throw any kicks due to Tavares wanting the show on the ground, though he did catch him with a low kick to the stones that delayed the bout for some time while Tavares recovered.

All in all it was a solid fight for Tavares and a setback for Stout, as both men were vying for a spot on the cusp of being a true contender. Tavares should get that contender fight, while Stout may have to fight an up-and-comer now before he gets another name, and the much-anticipated fight with "The Cowboy" Donald Cerrone will surely have to wait.
