Oklahoma State-Alabama Would Have Been a Much More Interesting BCS Title Game
It's hard to argue that LSU should have been replaced in the BCS National Championship Game. After all, the Tigers were 13-0 heading into the game and gave no indications that they'd be so terrible against Alabama this time around.
But, with the hindsight we've gained after watching Alabama's dominant 21-0 victory over the Tigers, it's safe to say Oklahoma State would, at the very least, have provided a much more interesting game to watch.
Alabama's defense was very impressive on Monday night, but it's tough to tell just how great it truly is. Most of the dominance against LSU was because the Tigers' play-calling was horrendous and Jordan Jefferson was terrible.
Comparing Brandon Weeden of Oklahoma State to Jefferson is like comparing Tom Brady to an eighth-grade quarterback. And comparing Justin Blackmon to Reuben Randle is only slightly less unfair.
The Cowboy offense definitely would have scored some points against the Crimson Tide. They wouldn't have scored more than 30 points and probably still would have lost the game, but it at least would have made for an infinitely more watchable game.
The LSU defense is much better than Oklahoma State's defense, so playing the Cowboys would have allowed the Tide to score more, but how much more is an interesting question.
While the LSU defense forced Alabama into several three-and-outs, Oklahoma State relies on forcing turnovers at opportune times.
Oklahoma State probably would have been able to force A.J. McCarron to throw a couple of ill-advised passes that turn into interceptions.
And giving Weeden and Blackmon extra possessions is never a good idea, even if you have the best defense in college football.
LSU just simply didn't have the offensive talent to match Alabama's defense. The option play wasn't working and Jefferson doesn't have the arm to stretch the field vertically.
Oklahoma State, on the other hand, has at least two future NFL players at skill positions on offense. LSU probably had one (Randle).
Having a future NFL quarterback would make Alabama's defense work harder and they would have definitely given up more big plays.
It's too late to go back and put the Cowboys in the national championship game, but in hindsight, we can now see that Oklahoma State would have made for a more compelling game.
