Bills 2009 Offseason Checklist

Neil GarrandJan 3, 2009

As we sit on our couches, uninspired, trying to pick a playoff team to route for, we are curious of what is to come for 2009.  We can't help but ask ourselves "what do the Bills have to do to be successful next season?"

Bills 2009 Offseason Checklist:

1. Obtain a Pass Rusher.

The Bill's defense was a decent unit in 2008, but are looking to be a top ten defense in 2009 (14th in 2008). The defense should be solid in 2009, but a pass rusher will help them immensely. Buffalo was 28th in the league in sacks in 2008.  They need to find more ways to get after the quarterback and cause havoc in the backfield.

2. Shore up the Offensive Line.

Buffalo's 2008 offense ranked twenty-fifth overall.  They desperately need a center to help solidify the middle. Many have speculated that the Bills may draft a center. Whatever they do, they need someone who can make an instant impact and take control of scrimmage play for the Bills.

3. Find Play-Making receivers.

They have Lee Evans and Josh Reed is no doubt an important role player, but they need another critical threat out there to keep the opposition honest. This goes for their pass-catching tight ends too.

Robert Royal, another role player type, does not have defenses cringing at the thought of his aerial assault. Maybe wide receivers James Hardy and/or Steve Johnson will step up during the off-season and give the Bills the extra ammunition they need.  Until the Bills have play-making threats at the No. 2 receiver spot and at tight end, their passing offense will not improve.

4. Sign Angelo Crowell.

He definitely can be an asset on this Bills defense, and he as stated that he wants to stay in Buffalo.

5. Sign a Capable Back-up Quarterback.

Many think Losman, a free agent in 2009, will be gone.  Whether Losman stays or goes, the Bills need to make sure that whoever is behind Edwards is able to manage the football game.
