Alabama vs. LSU: College Football Fans Should Expect BCS Title Rematch in 2013

Jun 7, 2018

There are no two stronger college football programs right now than the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers.

For those who didn’t like the idea of these teams meeting a second time this season for the BCS National Title, you are going to hate it when the exact same scenario plays out again next season.

That will be four meetings in two seasons for the SEC powerhouses.

While many college football homers will clamor that there is a conspiracy on the level of the JFK assassination, this is just the BCS putting the two most NFL-ready teams on the same field as many times as they possibly can.

Looking at the numbers, this is a matchup of the two best defenses in the entire sport. Combined, the teams are giving up 19.3 points per game. That’s ridiculous!

Neither team has much of a pass offense, but both feature dynamic run attacks that are led by powerful offensive linemen which will be scattered all through the NFL draft. While the Crimson Tide will go to battle with star Trent Richardson getting the majority of the carries, LSU will use a running back tandem of Michael Ford and Spencer Ware, as well as dual-threat QB Jordan Jefferson.

Add two powerhouse defenses to subpar quarterback play and stellar running games and you have what it was like in the NFL’s AFC North for so many seasons.

The games between these squads may not be high scoring, but if the Pittsburgh Steelers played the Baltimore Ravens to a 9-6 win in overtime, people would call it an instant classic. Now fans have the chance to see that game four times in two seasons.

For this plan to work correctly, the Crimson Tide have to sneak out the victory on Monday, January 9 over the Bayou Bengals in the BCS Title game. That will cause enough clamor to make next season’s regular season meeting between these squads on November 3, 2012 as big of a deal as this season’s matchup was.

If that regular season game is close and both teams perform well in 2012, which shouldn’t be hard with another stellar year of requiting under both team’s belts, there WILL be another rematch between Alabama and LSU.

That’s a good thing, whether fans can admit it or not.
