WWE: Is Rock vs. Cena or Rock vs. Someone Else Better for Business?

David RutterCorrespondent IIIJanuary 5, 2012

Let me start off by stating I am not a John Cena hater. The only issue I have with the character is that I think he just needs to get a little edgier.

The Rock vs. John Cena has been scheduled as the main event of WrestleMania 28 since the night after WrestleMania 27.

Never before has the main event of WrestleMania been booked one full year in advance. If it can work for any two people it's without a doubt John Cena and The Rock.

What makes the prospects of this match so epic is that you are taking possibly the greatest sports entertainer of all time (The Rock) and pitting him against John Cena, the man who took the company on his shoulders when The Rock left and has run with it since.

Both men are by no means phenomenal technical wrestlers, they both can deliver when the time calls for it, but they are no Shawn Michaels or Chris Jericho in the ring.

They are however both great entertainers with massive followings who know their way around a microphone and have demonstrated that ability for years.

This match reminds me of Rock vs. Hogan from WrestleMania 18. At the time, Rock was the man, he was the face and future of the company. Hogan was a returning legend who wanted to take back what was his and when it was all said and done, Rock was victorious and Hogan was still a legend.

My issue with Cena vs. Rock is that I feel like this is a rehash of Rock vs. Hogan.

Cena is now the face of the company and Rock is the returning legend. Aside from Rock hating Cena because he claims Rock turned his back on the company, what is the significance of this storyline?

Are we suppose to cheer Rock because he's mad at Cena for running his mouth? Isn't this what Rock did for years?

I just don't see how this match helps either competitor at the end of the day. Cena is already as over as it gets, so he gets nothing if he wins. Cena has already beat legends such as HBK, Undertaker and Triple H. If Rock wins that will be awesome, but we all know he's not sticking around full time, so why should he go over the company's number one man?

Sure, people (including myself) will watch the match regardless of story line or merit, but couldn't there be any better matches to involve both men?

John Cena does not need to be in the main event of WrestleMania every year to sell tickets. People are going to pay to see him regardless if he's on first, second, third or sixth. The Rock is a returning legend who deserves nothing but the main event because he will bring in old viewers who will tune in just to see him. So why not pit Rock against someone who needs that final push? Why not CM Punk or Miz?

Both wrestlers and the business would benefit much more in the long run if they competed against "The Great One" compared to Cena fighting Rock.

Imagine the promos between Punk and Rock leading up to WrestleMania. Pure gold.

We've also already seen that Miz and Rock can play off of one another very well so that works as well.

At this point, Cena should be at WrestleMania to help other talent get over. Yes I know Miz beat Cena last year, but that was more about Rock sticking it to Cena than about putting Miz over.

WWE needs to continue to look at their future.

In the past they have used WrestleMania to put younger talents over. (Warrior beat Hogan, Austin beat HBK, Rock beat Hogan and Batista beat Triple H).

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of Rock vs. Cena and I want to see it, but why not at Royal Rumble, SummerSlam or Survivor Series?

What are you thoughts?
