Conor QueenanMay 31, 2018

Borussia Monchengladbach ace Marco Reus is set to join Borussia Dortmund in a deal that will keep the German international at his hometown club till 2017, according to goal.com.

It is widely known that "Rolls" Reus had a โ‚ฌ17.5 million buyout clause, and Bayern Munich were willing to meet the price. However, news broke today that he will be joining the Bundesliga champions after impressive performances in the first half of the season.

Dortmund Sporting Director Michael Zorc told the official Borussia Dortmund website that: "In Marco Reus we sign our absolute preference for an offensive player.ย We are pleased that Marco has chosen to come to BVB despite high quality competition."

Reus, whose stock may possibly rise because of his potential performances in Euro 2012, has stated that theย opportunity of European football was essential in the deal (via goal.com) He said "I'll take the next step and play for a club that contends for the championship and gives me the guarantee to play in the Champions League. This is an opportunity I see in Dortmund."

It remains to be seen if the deal is due to a possible departure by Mario Gotze. However BVB Chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke specifiedย that the money will come from ย "reserves" (via goal.com).

We must assume that this implies that the money was not used from a potential transfer away from the club.
