Brock Lesnar Retires at UFC 141 After Alistair Overeem Spoils His Return

Michael NargiDec 30, 2011

Alistair Overeem dominated Brock Lesnar in the UFC 141 main event. Lesnar started the fight slow, feeling out Overeem instead of charging him and attempting a takedown as many suspected he should have done. Overeem landed a knee to the body and followed with several more body kicks.

After another kick to the body, Lesnar collapsed and knelt in the Octagon, awaiting the punishment that he was about to endure. Lesnar successfully covered his face and avoided any significant damage to his face while on the ground, until Overeem wound up and landed an enormous shot to Lesnar's body that ended the fight, with the TKO being called at 2:26 of the first round.

After the fight, Lesnar admitted that he had decided that this was his last fight if he was to lose. He went on to explain, that if he won, he would take the title shot and retire after the championship match, no matter the outcome. Lesnar was fighting in his first match since October 2010. During the 14-month hiatus, he battled diverticulitis and admitted that the disease attributed to his decision to retire. Lesnar said that he had promised his wife and kids that he would retire and was sticking to it.

Lesnar entered the UFC arrogant and cocky but leaves a much more humble individual. It would have been very impressive had Brock Lesnar been able to climb back to the top of the UFC heavyweight division after his health troubles, but he was unable to do so. He took on the ultimate challenge, battling a 260 pound fighter that had not lost since 2007. Lesnar ends his MMA career with a record of 5-3.

Alistair Overeem will now look ahead to his fight for the UFC heavyweight title against the champion, Junior dos Santos.
