UFC 141 Results: Brock Lesnar Loses to Alistair Overeem, Retires from Octagon
Brock Lesnar has retired from the UFC.
Tonight in the main event of UFC 141, Alistair Overeem used vicious knees and kicks to the midsection to finish Brock Lesnar by TKO in the first round.
The bigger news, however, came after the fight when Lesnar announced he will not fight again in the Octagon.
"I've had a really difficult couple of years with my disease," said Lesnar, who has suffered from diverticulitis, to Joe Rogan after the fight. "I'm going to officially say that this is the last time you'll see me in the Octagon...Brock Lesnar is officially retired."
In his first fight in the UFC, Overeem won in convincing fashion to earn a title shot against heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos.
Here are a few more takeaways from the fight.
What We'll Remember About This Fight
Lesnar's retirement, of course, and Overeem's memorable Octagon debut. But as for the fight itself, I'll remember Lesnar's inability—and, it seemed at times, unwillingness—to take down Overeem.
It's almost like he over-thought; wrestling is what he'd expect! So instead he tried to bob and weave with the K-1 champ. Bad times.
What We Learned About Brock Lesnar
That he will no longer fight in the UFC. The UFC has big shoes to fill, literally, if they are indeed saying goodbye to their biggest pay-per-view draw and perhaps the most compelling (for better or worse) personality and back story in MMA history.
Also, it may be apropos of nothing, but here's a telling exchange between Rogan and Mike Goldberg immediately after the stoppage:
Rogan: "It was shots to the body that did it."
Goldberg: "Shots to a surgically repaired body."
What We Learned About Alistair Overeem
That he's good at what he's good at. This was a striking match, and Overeem won it. His takedown defense, not to mention his actual ground game, never came heavily into play.
But he certainly earned his title shot with Junior dos Santos. And perhaps just as importantly, he probably put to rest all that talk about how he's never beaten an opponent capable of bullying him back.
What's Next for Lesnar?
Hunting, I imagine. Lots and lots of hunting.
What's Next for Overeem?
A nice New Year's Eve in Vegas, then back to the gym to train for his title shot. I will be mildly looking forward to a fight that will feature two guys with a combined 26 KOs and TKOs between them.
