I did a few preview articles for other sites this week, including this one for the New York Times.  Head over there to take a look at some of my thoughts regarding how the Cowboys must beat Cover 2 Man Under to beat the Giants on Sunday night.  Feel free to leave your comments there.

A few highlights from the article:

  • Cover 2 Man Under and safe coverages can work against Tony Romo because the Giants hide the coverage and feign blitzes from the look.  Contrary to what people think, Romo does not necessarily thrive against the blitz.  Instead, he does well when he knows whether a blitz is coming, i.e. when a defense shows blitzes and actually comes, or sits in a safe presnap alignment and then stays back.  When defenses fake a blitz or blitz from a conservative look, Romo's career passer rating plummets.
  • The Cowboys offense is a completely different one when they do not have the threat of the deep pass on their side.  When they face Cover 2 Man Under, it is almost impossible to get their stud wide receivers open down the field because deep routes are effectively double-teamed.
  • In my estimation, the Cowboys will need to run the ball effectively, place Miles Austin in the slot, and run a lot of crossing routes from bunch formations in order to beat Cover 2 Man Under.
