What were you doing at the age of 12?

Tying a perfect knot in my shoe was an everyday struggle. Crust on my peanut butter and jelly sandwich was a no-no.

Playing basketball? On a 10-foot rim? That sure looks awfully high.

Enter Damon Harge. The 12-year-old that stands 5'4" and checks in at 120 pounds is just a little bit ahead of the curve on the basketball court.

In this YouTube video he is destroying the competition on the AAU circuit. He can shoot, has incredible vision and can dish the sort of assist that would make Steve Nash jealous.

He has decided to forgo his middle school eligibility and jump straight to the high school level. Yes that’s right—a kid that hasn’t hit puberty yet is balling against kids six years older.

He currently plays for the Christian Faith Center Academy in North Carolina and is the No. 1-rated sixth grader in the nation.

The kid averaged 35 points per game in middle school last year as a fifth grader and is now holding his own on the varsity level. He played in front of John Wall earlier this year and the Wizards guard was very excited to watch Harge:

The kid was unguardable. I knew right away he was a star. I just wanted him to continue to work hard.

All of this is too serious for a 12-year-old kid. He should be concentrating on having fun, but, at the same time, I understand why it's happening. What's he gonna say, "No thanks, I don't want to be ranked right now?" Plus, I'd be shocked if there's a player that's more skilled than him at his age. It's not wrong and it's not his fault. Basketball isn't the only sport that ranks kids early. It's just the day and age we live in.

Truer words haven’t been spoken, but that’s a whole different can of worms. For now, let’s hope that Harge stays hungry and continues to get better every year so he can enter college in 2018 and be the next John Wall.

Considering his coach claims that Harge wakes up at 4:30 every morning and takes 6,500 shots per week, that shouldn’t be a problem.

It will be interesting to watch Harge as he progresses through school and see how much taller he gets. I’m pretty sure he is going to need some additional bulk if he plans on competing in the collegiate level.

Good thing he has six-and-a-half years to do something about it.
