Over much of the last year, Dimitar Berbatov has found himself out of favor in the starting lineup in important fixtures to the likes of both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck.
However, it appears that Berbatov could be joining one of his former clubs in the upcoming winter transfer window.
Ivan Dobrinov, a member of the group which represents Berbatov, has already insisted that "it's more than a rumour" when discussing the possibility of Berbatov joining Leverkusen in a recent interview with the German magazine Bild.
Dobrinov later went on to discuss the ramifications of getting Berbatov from United.
The agent said, "Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov." However, it is not going to be easy to acquire Berbatov from United.
Dobrinov went on to explain why it was so hard to acquire Berbatov: "We wait until 2nd January. Until then, United have the option, but if that does not happen then Berbatov would be a free transfer in the summer."
Manchester United have the option to keep Berbatov until the summer of 2013, but if they do not decide to hold onto Berbatov in the next couple of days, Berbatov could be moving to the Bundesliga this summer.
Over the past week, Berbatov has scored four goals, including a hat trick at Old Trafford on Boxing Day against Wigan.
Berbatov shared the Premier League golden boot last season with former teammate Carlos Tevez.
Even with his lack of playing time, Berbatov is among the most creative players in the Premier League, and it will be interesting to see if he will leave the Theatre of Dreams to play elsewhere.
