College Football Rankings Week 7: B/R's Official Top 25

Brian PedersenOct 4, 2014

The Purge isn't just a crazy sociological idea that was made into a pair of bad movies, it's also what we might as well call the just-completed weekend of college football.

Unbeaten and ranked teams got picked off like targets in a child's carnival game, with nearly every team in last week's Top 25 facing major adversity over the past few days.

As a result, the Bleacher Report Top 25 got itself a makeover.

This week's poll was voted on by 19 members of B/R's college football team: writers Keith Arnold, Ben Axelrod, Phil Callihan, Michael Felder, Justin Ferguson, Kyle Kensing, David Kenyon, Ben Kercheval, Adam Kramer, Brian Leigh, Brian Pedersen, Barrett Sallee, Brad Shepard, Erin Sorensen, Marc Torrence and Greg Wallace, as well as editors Eric Bowman, Hunter Mandel and Max Rausch.

Each voter submits his or her ballot based on observations made during the just-completed week's games. Teams receive 25 points for a first-place vote, all the way down to one point for being ranked 25th. And then the top 25 vote-getters are ranked in order of their point totals.

Check out Bleacher Report's Week 7 poll, then give us your thoughts in the comments section.

Others Receiving Votes

1 of 26

The list of teams that didn't make the Top 25 should look familiar, because it includes several schools that were ranked before this past weekend of craziness.

Topping the list, however, is the lone unbeaten team that hails from outside the five power conferences. Marshall is 5-0 after opening Conference USA play with a 56-14 win at Old Dominion behind 198 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Devon Johnson.

  • Marshall (25)
  • USC (23)
  • LSU (21)
  • Louisville (11)
  • BYU (6)
  • Washington (6)
  • Memphis (5)
  • Utah (4)
  • Wisconsin (3)
  • Temple (2)
  • West Virginia (2)
  • North Dakota State (1)
  • Virginia (1)

25. Missouri Tigers

2 of 26

Week 6 result: Bye

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. Georgia

Poll points: 43

Last week's ranking: Not ranked

The Tigers (4-1, 1-0 SEC) were off this past week, which probably made them the safest team in the country because they were immune to the craziness that befell so many other top schools.

Missouri's last game involved a major comeback down the stretch, as it scored two late touchdowns to win 21-20 at South Carolina and be the only team in the SEC East without a conference loss.

It now gets a chance to put a stranglehold on first place by hosting Georgia, which Missouri beat on the road last season en route to the East title.

24. Nebraska Cornhuskers

3 of 26

Week 6 result: Lost 27-22 at Michigan State

Week 7 matchup: Bye

Poll points: 46

Last week's ranking: 19th

The Cornhuskers (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, rallying from a 27-3 deficit, but Tommy Armstrong Jr. was intercepted with 30 seconds left to end the late charge.

Nebraska did almost nothing for three quarters, with star running back Ameer Abdullah held to just 45 rushing yards on 24 carries but with two short rushing TDs during the fourth quarter. Armstrong threw for 273 yards but completed only 20 of 43 passes and was intercepted twice.

Jordan Westerkamp had nine catches for 158 yards for Nebraska, while De'Mornay Pierson-El returned a punt 62 yards for a TD to cut the lead to 27-22 with 3:22 left.

23. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

4 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 28-17 vs. Miami (Florida)

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. Duke

Poll points: 68

Last week's ranking: Not ranked

The Yellow Jackets (5-0, 2-0 ACC) churned out 318 rushing yards to outlast Miami and move into a tie with Virginia for first in the Coastal Division.

Georgia Tech ran the ball 65 times and only attempted seven passes, keeping the ball away from the Hurricanes with their option run game led by 133 rushing yards from Zach Laskey. Four different players ran for rushing TDs, including quarterback Justin Thomas, all coming from inside the 10-yard line.

Tech also intercepted two passes from Miami's Brad Kaaya to help its cause.

22. Stanford Cardinal

5 of 26

Week 6 result: Lost 17-14 at Notre Dame

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 10 vs. Washington State

Poll points: 103

Last week's ranking: 14th

The Cardinal (3-2) lost late at Notre Dame for the second time in three years, allowing a 23-yard touchdown pass with 1:01 left after taking the lead themselves just two minutes earlier.

Despite only 205 yards of offense, Stanford led 7-0 thanks to a 10-yard Kevin Hogan touchdown run and pulled ahead 14-10 with 3:01 left on Remound Wright's 11-yard TD run. In between, though, Stanford again struggled in the red zone and committed a pair of turnovers.

Hogan completed only 18 of 36 passes for 158 yards with two interceptions. Stanford's defense had only allowed 26 points entering this game but gave up 370 yards to the Fighting Irish.

21. Clemson Tigers

6 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 41-0 vs. North Carolina State

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. Louisville

Poll points: 112

Last week's ranking: 24th

The Tigers (3-2, 2-1 ACC) got another huge game from freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson to go along with a stellar defensive performance to earn their first shutout in conference play since 1998.

Watson threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns, and he added another 62 rushing yards and two scores. All of Watson's TDs came in the game's first 20 minutes as Clemson jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead. Both of Watson's TD passes went to Mike Williams, who had six catches for 155 yards.

Clemson held North Carolina State—which scored 41 points against Florida State last week—to just 156 yards. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett went 4-of-18 for 35 yards, and his fourth-quarter fumble was returned 16 yards for a TD by Vic Beasley.

20. Arizona State Sun Devils

7 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 38-34 at USC

Week 7 matchup: Bye

Poll points: 116

Last week's ranking: 25th

The Sun Devils (4-1, 2-1 Pac-12) got a 46-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass from Mike Bercovici to Jaelen Strong as time expired for the shocking road victory, their second touchdown in the final 2:53 and part of a 20-7 run in the last four minutes of play.

Arizona State trailed 27-18 late in the fourth quarter before scoring three TDs on passes by Bercovici, who was making his second start in the place of injured quarterback Taylor Kelly. Bercovici finished with 510 yards and five TDs on 27-of-45 passing, with Strong (10 catches, 202 yards, three TDs) his top target.

Bercovici had to do a lot without much of a run game, as ASU had only 31 rushing yards. He's thrown for 998 yards in his two starts, though the other was a 62-27 home loss to UCLA the week before.

19. Kansas State Wildcats

8 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 45-13 vs. Texas Tech

Week 7 matchup: Bye

Poll points: 131

Last week's ranking: 23rd

The Wildcats (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) gained 535 yards and forced four turnovers in an easy win over visiting Texas Tech.

Jake Waters had 395 yards of total offense and accounted for five total touchdowns. The quarterback threw for 290 yards and four scores and also ran for 105 with a TD. He threw two TDs apiece to Curry Sexton (nine receptions, 128 yards) and Tyler Lockett (12 catches, 125 yards).

K-State held the Red Raiders to 347 yards and intercepted quarterback Davis Webb four times.

18. Oklahoma State Cowboys

9 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 37-20 vs. Iowa State

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Kansas

Poll points: 136

Last week's ranking: 22nd

The Cowboys (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) used big plays on special teams on both sides of halftime to spark their fourth straight win.

Iowa State allowed a kickoff to roll on the ground, enabling Oklahoma State to recover it at the 11-yard line. A few plays later, Desmond Roland scored on the last snap of the first half to take a 13-6 lead. OK State got the ball to start the second half, and Tyreek Hill made that count by returning the opening kickoff 97 yards for a TD and a 20-6 lead.

Roland finished with 95 rushing yards and two TDs, while OK State quarterback Daxx Garman shook off two interceptions to throw for 271 yards and a score.

17. East Carolina Pirates

10 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 45-24 vs. SMU

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at South Florida

Poll points: 170

Last week's ranking: 20th

The Pirates (4-1, 1-0 American) easily won their first game in the American Athletic Conference since moving over from Conference USA, paced by senior quarterback Shane Carden's 410-yard, four-touchdown performance.

Carden, who became East Carolina's all-time passing leader with 9,134 yards during the game, connected with two main targets. Isaiah Jones caught nine passes for 130 yards and a touchdown, while Justin Hardy caught eight balls for 120 yards and three TDs.

East Carolina held SMU to 51 rushing yards but did allow Mustangs quarterback Garrett Krstich to throw for 339 yards and two TDs.

16. UCLA Bruins

11 of 26

Week 6 result: Lost 30-28 vs. Utah

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. Oregon

Poll points: 176

Last week's ranking: 10th

The Bruins (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) were the last of the unbeatens to fall Saturday, dropping a late-night home game to Utah that they trailed 24-14 and then led 28-27 before allowing a 29-yard field goal with 34 seconds left.

UCLA had two chances to win it on the final play, but Ka'imi Fairbairn missed on a pair of long field-goal tries (getting two shots after a running-into-the-kicker penalty was called on the Utes on the first errant kick).

Brett Hundley threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns, including a 93-yard strike to Devin Fuller, but he was also sacked 10 times by the Utes. Hundley threw an interception that was returned for a score by Utah in the first quarter.

15. Ohio State Buckeyes

12 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 52-24 at Maryland

Week 7 matchup: Bye

Poll points: 190

Last week's ranking: 21st

The Buckeyes (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) topped 50 points for the third straight game, jumping out to a 31-10 lead and then cruising to an easy road win in their conference opener.

J.T. Barrett completed 18 of 23 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns, and the redshirt freshman also ran for 71 yards and a TD. Ezekiel Elliott added 139 rushing yards for Ohio State, which had outscored its opponents 168-52 since losing at home to Virginia Tech.

The Buckeyes defense also came up big with four interceptions, including one returned 19 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter by freshman Raekwon McMillan.

14. Texas A&M Aggies

13 of 26

Week 6 result: Lost 48-31 at Mississippi State

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. Ole Miss

Poll points: 236

Last week's ranking: 7th

The Aggies (5-1, 2-1 SEC) couldn't muster another major comeback for the second straight week, falling behind 28-10 at halftime and never getting within 17 points after that.

Kenny Hill had his first rough outing of his career, throwing three interceptions that negated his 365 yards and four touchdowns on 37-of-62 passing. Two of those TDs came in the final minutes, after Texas A&M trailed 48-17.

Josh Reynolds and Speedy Noil each had a pair of TD catches for the Aggies, but despite their offensive numbers, it was the defensive breakdowns that cost A&M. It allowed 559 yards to Mississippi State, including 289 on the ground, and let Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott account for five touchdowns that featured three rushing scores.

Since a three-game stretch during which it allowed a total of 19 points, A&M has given up 76 points in the last eight quarters plus an overtime. Last week it needed two late TDs to force extra time before beating Arkansas.

13. TCU Horned Frogs

14 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 37-33 vs. Oklahoma

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Baylor

Poll points: 244

Last week's ranking: Not ranked

It took three seasons, but TCU seems like it's finally arrived in the Big 12.

The Horned Frogs (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) earned their biggest win since moving into the conference in 2012, using an uptempo offense and an opportunistic defense to knock off previously unbeaten Oklahoma.

TCU scored two defensive touchdowns, the first coming fewer than five minutes into the game when Cliff Murphy recovered a fumble in the end zone for a 7-0 lead. The second made it 37-31 early in the fourth quarter after Paul Dawson intercepted a Trevor Knight pass and returned it 41 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

The Frogs also stuffed Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine on fourth down with just over three minutes left to help seal the victory. Their offense was pretty effective as well, racking up 469 yards with quarterback Trevone Boykin accounting for 395 of that.

Boykin threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns, and he led TCU with 77 rushing yards on 22 carries but also committed two turnovers.

"While the Horned Frogs defense will—and should—get much of the credit for this victory, quarterback Trevone Boykin had one of the best games of his career," wrote Graham Watson of Yahoo Sports.

TCU had lost its previous two meetings with Oklahoma as Big 12 foes, but both games were close, falling 20-17 last year in Norman after losing 24-17 at home in 2012.

12. Arizona Wildcats

15 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 31-24 at Oregon

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. USC

Poll points: 254

Last week's ranking: Not ranked

The Wildcats (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) put themselves on the map with another upset win over a top-10 team, their seventh in the past 10 seasons and third against Oregon. None of the others came on the road, though.

Off to its first 5-0 start since 1998, Arizona pulled off the shocker with a mostly young corps of stars led by redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon. He completed 20 of 31 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown and even gained 21 yards on his own throw after it was batted into his hands. He had a two-headed monster running behind him in the form of senior Terris Jones-Grigsby (27 carries, 115 yards, one touchdown) and freshman Nick Wilson (13 carries, 92 yards, two TDs).

Those rushers also combined for five catches for 129 yards and a score by Wilson, mostly on routes when Oregon didn't follow them out of the backfield.

Jones-Grigsby's TD run came with 2:54 left for the go-ahead score, after Oregon rallied from a 24-14 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter. Arizona then sealed the win when sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright stripped Oregon's Marcus Mariota and recovered the fumble.

11. Georgia Bulldogs

16 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 44-17 vs. Vanderbilt

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Missouri

Poll points: 264

Last week's ranking: 13th

The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1 SEC) used a 21-point first quarter to cruise to an easy league win, with running back Todd Gurley having another big day.

Gurley ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and he also threw a 50-yard pass. Nick Chubb added 78 yards and a rushing TD, while quarterback Hutson Mason completed 11 of 17 passes for 121 yards and two TDs.

Georgia had a solid defensive performance as well, holding Vanderbilt to 320 yards. Devin Bowman picked off a pass from Stephen Rivers and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown midway through the third quarter.

10. Oregon Ducks

17 of 26

Week 6 result: Lost 31-24 vs. Arizona

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at UCLA

Poll points: 268

Last week's ranking: 1st

The Ducks (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) got Week 6 off to a wild start with their shocking home loss to Arizona, a game where their own mistakes were just as costly as ones due to odd penalties.

Marcus Mariota showed off his talents throwing and catching the ball, tossing two touchdown passes and hauling in a 26-yard TD on a throwback from Royce Freeman. But the junior quarterback also lost two fumbles, including one in the final minutes when he was stripped by Arizona's Scooby Wright on a potential game-tying drive.

The Ducks were unable to put together big plays on offense, or make key stops when defending. John Canzano of The Oregonian wrote that the "shine is gone" from Oregon, adding, "There is nothing innovative about Oregon right now. Nothing edgy. Nothing mysterious. They're solved, totally and completely. Not from a talent standpoint, but from scheme."

Oregon committed 10 penalties in the game, but the most painful one involved defensive lineman Tony Washington getting flagged for bowing after recording a sack. It came with the score tied at 24 and Arizona driving, and the personal foul extended the Wildcats' winning drive.

It was Oregon's sixth straight loss in which it failed to score 30 points, dating back to 2010, and was the second consecutive loss for the Ducks against Arizona.

9. Oklahoma Sooners

18 of 26

Week 6 result: Lost 37-33 at TCU

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. Texas (at Dallas)

Poll points: 275

Last week's ranking: 3rd

The Sooners (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) couldn't pull out a second consecutive road dogfight, losing for the first time since November after failing to overcome a pair of turnovers that TCU instantly converted into points.

Trevor Knight had a pass early in the fourth quarter intercepted and returned 41 yards for a touchdown, giving TCU a 37-31 lead. The Horned Frogs also scored a TD on a fumble recovery in the end zone in the first quarter.

Knight threw for 309 yards and a touchdown, but he completed only 14 of 35 passes with two interceptions. Knight also ran for 61 yards, while Samaje Perine had 87 (on 25 carries) along with three rushing TDs.

Perine's third TD, with 9:28 left in the third quarter, gave Oklahoma a 31-24 lead, but then TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin tied the game less than three minutes later with a 29-yard TD pass to Deante' Gray.

Oklahoma won two weeks ago at West Virginia, turning a 24-24 tie into a 45-33 victory. The Sooners were tied at 24 in this game as well.

8. Alabama Crimson Tide

19 of 26

Week 6 result: Lost 23-17 at Ole Miss

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Arkansas

Poll points: 336

Last week's ranking: 2nd

The Crimson Tide (4-1, 1-1 SEC) suffered their first loss at the earliest point in any season since Nick Saban's first year as coach, as two later turnovers contributed to giving up a seven-point lead and prevented a last-minute comeback.

Alabama led 17-10 midway through the fourth quarter before Ole Miss tied the game on a 34-yard touchdown pass by Bo Wallace to Vince Sanders with 5:29 left. Christion Jones then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and fewer than three minutes later the Rebels scored the game-winning TD on a 10-yard pass from Wallace to Jaylen Walton.

The Tide had a chance to win, though, after blocking the extra point and then moving down the field to get into scoring range. They got as close as Ole Miss' 22-yard line before a holding call moved them back, and then on the next play Blake Sims was intercepted in the back of the end zone with 37 seconds left when he overthrew tight end O.J. Howard.

"I made a mistake and threw the wrong throw," Sims told Michael Casagrande of AL.com. "I'll learn from it and get better."

Alabama took a 14-3 lead into halftime after Cyrus Jones stripped Ole Miss' I'Tavius Mathers and returned the fumble 13 yards for a TD, but then managed just one field goal after that.

7. Michigan State Spartans

20 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 27-22 vs. Nebraska

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Purdue

Poll points: 360

Last week's ranking: 8th

The Spartans (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) tried to give away their conference opener, allowing 19 points to Nebraska in the final 13 minutes of a game they had dominated for three-plus quarters.

After cruising for much of the night, the win wasn't sealed until Trae Waynes intercepted a pass from Tommy Armstrong Jr. with 30 seconds left.

Michigan State led 27-3 entering the fourth quarter, getting 234 passing yards from Connor Cook—despite him only completing 11 of 29 passes—and 111 rushing yards a touchdown from Jeremy Langford. Tony Lippett caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Cook and also scored on a 32-yard run.

The Spartans forced four turnovers and held Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah to just 45 yards on 24 carries.

6. Ole Miss Rebels

21 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 23-17 vs. Alabama

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Texas A&M

Poll points: 399

Last week's ranking: 12th

The Rebels (5-0, 2-0 SEC) notched arguably their biggest regular-season win in school history, knocking off Alabama with a late touchdown pass and a pair of huge defensive plays in the final minutes.

Bo Wallace hit Jaylen Walton for an acrobatic 10-yard touchdown pass along the side of the end zone with 2:54 left to break a 17-17 tie, then defensive back Senquez Golson made his own highlight-reel catch in the back of the end zone to intercept Alabama quarterback Blake Sims with 37 seconds left.

Wallace threw for 251 yards and three touchdown passes, two in the fourth quarter after Alabama took a 17-10 lead. After Ole Miss tied it on a 34-yard Vince Sanders TD catch, Channing Ward forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that the Rebels recovered to set up the game-winning score.

The Rebels, who had turned the ball over nine times in the first four games, only had one giveaway Saturday, but it was a huge one. It came when I'Tavius Mathers was stripped by Cyrus Jones, who picked up the loose ball and returned it 13 yards for a TD that gave Alabama a 14-3 lead just before halftime.

Ole Miss is 5-0 for the first time since 1962, and the win snapped a 10-game losing streak to Alabama.

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

22 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 17-14 vs. Stanford

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. North Carolina

Poll points: 405

Last week's ranking: 9th

The Fighting Irish (5-0) remained unbeaten in the rain and against one of the top defenses in the country, getting a 23-yard touchdown pass from Everett Golson to Ben Koyack with 1:01 left.

The score capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive that came two minutes after Stanford took a 14-10 lead, and it marked Notre Dame's best stretch of offensive production on an otherwise sloppy and mistake-filled afternoon. Everett Golson threw for 241 yards and two TDs, but he was intercepted at the goal line, one of two Irish turnovers.

Notre Dame also missed a pair of field goals but got a stellar performance from its defense; Stanford was held to just 205 yards and forced into two turnovers. The Fighting Irish improved to 5-0 for the second time in three seasons but only the third time since 1996.

4. Mississippi State Bulldogs

23 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 48-31 vs. Texas A&M

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. Auburn

Poll points: 410 (two first-place votes)

Last week's ranking: 11th

College football elite, it's time to welcome the Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0 SEC) into the club.

Two weeks after taking down LSU on the road, Mississippi State knocked off a second consecutive top-10 team in impressive fashion. And just like that last game, it was mostly because of the exploits of its Heisman-worthy quarterback, junior Dak Prescott.

Prescott had 336 yards of total offense and accounted for five touchdowns. He completed 19 of 25 passes for 259 yards and two scores while adding three rushing TDs and 77 yards on the ground.

"He's going to get a lot more attention now with his performance," MSU coach Dan Mullen told The Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "But as I've told everyone, that's what we expect from him."

Prescott's final score, an 11-yard run early in the fourth quarter, gave the Bulldogs a 48-17 lead before they surrendered two late touchdowns. Like the win over LSU, the final score looked closer than the game, as against the Tigers they led 34-10 in the fourth.

MSU also got 107 rushing yards and two TDs from Josh Robinson, and three interceptions from sophomore linebacker Richie Brown.

3. Baylor Bears

24 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 28-7 at Texas

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 vs. TCU

Poll points: 411

Last week's ranking: 6th

The Bears (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) had one of their worst offensive outputs in recent memory, but thanks to great defense and special teams play, they turned a 7-0 halftime lead into a fourth win in their last five meetings with Texas.

Baylor got on the board early with a blocked field goal that was returned 62 yards for a touchdown by Terrell Burt, and its second score was aided by a fake punt to extend the drive. Bryce Petty threw for only 111 yards on just 7-of-22 passing, but he did throw two TDs. Shock Linwood picked up the slack by rushing for 148 yards and a TD.

The Bears limited Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoopes to 144 passing yards, completing 16 of 34 throws with two interceptions.

2. Florida State Seminoles

25 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 43-3 vs. Wake Forest

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Syracuse

Poll points: 451 (six first-place votes)

Last week's ranking: 4th

The Seminoles (5-0, 3-0 ACC) managed to avoid the chaos that befell most of the other top teams, shrugging off a slow start to score the game's final 43 points.

With Jameis Winston and his offensive teammates having an off day, it was kicker Roberto Aguayo and Florida State's defense that dominated the action. Aguayo, the reigning Lou Groza Award winner, nailed all five of his field goals, including a 52-yarder, making him 12-of-12 this season and 33-of-34 for his career.

The defense held Wake Forest to 126 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers. Reggie Northrup returned a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown, which was more than enough scoring for FSU to win.

Winston was 23-of-39 for 297 yards with a TD and an interception along with a rushing score.

1. Auburn Tigers

26 of 26

Week 6 result: Won 41-7 vs. LSU

Week 7 matchup: Oct. 11 at Mississippi State

Poll points: 467 (11 first-place votes)

Last week's ranking: 5th

The Tigers (5-0, 2-0 SEC) romped over the only team they lost to in conference play last season, racking up 566 yards to hand LSU its worst loss since 2000.

Nick Marshall threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 119 yards and two scores. Cameron Artis-Payne rushed for 126 of Auburn's 298 yards on the ground. Sammie Coates had four receptions for 144 yards and a TD.

Auburn held LSU to 280 yards of total offense and its fewest points since a 14-6 loss at Florida in 2012. Freshman Brandon Harris, making his first start at quarterback, completed just three of 13 passes for 58 yards.
