BCS Rankings Week 13: Rising Teams That Launched Up the Rankings

Ryan RudnanskyNov 20, 2011

What do you get when three top-five programs fall to unranked teams?

Why, a bunch of crazed fans, of course.

After then-No. 2 Oklahoma State, then-No. 4 Oregon and then-No. 5 Oklahoma all fell on Saturday, the latest BCS rankings have inserted three more teams into the title game discussion with just two weeks to go in college football's regular season.

Let's hear it for the BCS!

.....Oh, you don't like the BCS, do you?

Well, here are three teams that jumped in the BCS rankings following Week 12, anyway.

3. Stanford (No. 6)

The Stanford Cardinal fell to No. 9 overall in Week 11 when they got blown out by Oregon.

Now they have Oregon to thank for inserting them back into title game contention, if only it's an outside chance.

The Cardinal survived a scare against Pac-12 foe Cal in "The Big Game" on Saturday, but they were able to come away with a 31-28 victory after falling behind 13-7 early in the second quarter.

Top pro prospect Andrew Luck has oddly had problems with interceptions lately and faces the No. 22 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Week 13.

This tree hasn't fallen out of the title game discussion yet.

2. Virginia Tech (No. 5)

Virginia Tech is 1-1 against ranked opponents this season, but a 10-1 record is nonetheless impressive.

Some may have questions about the Hokies rising to No. 5 overall based on their strength of schedule, but the 37-26 victory over Georgia Tech was big for this team.

Quarterback Logan Thomas is not Tyrod Taylor, but he has done a respectable job this season, especially with his legs, accounting for 387 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

You add the fact the Hokies are giving up just 16.9 points per game this season (including just 23 points to Clemson) and that's what's gotten them into the top five.

1. Arkansas (No. 3)

Arkansas' only real blemish this season was a defeat to Alabama, but the Razorbacks didn't do themselves any favors by winning by slim margins to Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

But have no fear, Razorbacks fans. Your team has won its last three games by blowout (including against then-No. 9 South Carolina) and you still have a chance to get to the title game with a victory over LSU in Week 13.

Sure, that's no easy feat, but there are some signs that it will be a closer game than you may expect.

Like, quarterback Tyler Wilson, a better defense, outstanding special teams and players-back-from-injury signs.
