BCS Rankings: Does Arkansas Have a Fighter's Chance of Toppling LSU?

Ryan RudnanskyNov 20, 2011

The Arkansas Razorbacks haven't gotten much respect in the BCS rankings this season, and for good reason.

Despite their only loss being to Alabama, the Razorbacks have narrowly beaten such teams as Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss, who are all unranked this season.

But the Razorbacks should be respected now, as they likely will be in the latest BCS rankings released Sunday night.

Why?

Because Arkansas is playing its best football of the season right now.

After their narrow victory against Vanderbilt on Oct. 29, the Razorbacks have rallied with three blowouts against then-No. 9 South Carolina, Tennessee and Mississippi State.

Quarterback Tyler Wilson is playing his best ball of the season, spreading the ball around to multiple receivers, including legitimate threats Jarius Wright and Joe Adams.

The special teams have also been spectacular, and the defense has noticeably improved.

Another thing: this isn't the same Razorbacks team that got blown out by Alabama, 38-14. They are healthier, getting back defensive end Jake Bequette (who's been on a tear), defensive end Tenarius Wright and junior Dennis Johnson, who gives them another dimension in the running game.

Keep in mind: South Carolina is currently ranked second in the country in pass defense (giving up 137.5 passing yards per game) and Wilson still threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns against the Gamecocks on Nov. 5.

LSU is the No. 1-ranked pass defense in the country, and for good reason, with such standouts as top cornerback Morris Claiborne.

But don't think the Razorbacks won't make a game of this.

I don't see them winning, but if we can predict anything about this college football season, it's that it's unpredictable.
