South Carolina QB Coach Arrested: What Has He Been Teaching Stephen Garcia?
South Carolina quarterback coach G.A. Mangus was suspended by Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier after being arrested in Greenville as the result of a bizarre incident.
Mangus was in Greenville, S.C. to meet with a state delegation of high school coaches. Mangus is considered to be one of the best recruiters on the team and such meetings with local coaches only help reinforce that recruiting bond.
However, after the meeting, police found the 42-year-old Mangus urinating on the curb of the street that is on the busy, downtown main road.
According to WLTX television, police said they could smell alcohol on Mangus, and noticed that he was "unsteady on his feet" and his eyes were "dilated and glazed over." When questioned, he would not cooperate with police. He was evasive in answers even as to who he was, his speech was slurred, he was unsteady on his feet and his eyes were "glazed over".
This was on Tuesday morning. He was arrested and released that afternoon.
Though he is likely to only have to face a $470 fine if convicted, his suspension could cost him much more.
Spurrier did not give a time line for his return.
He was brought in three years ago from Middle Tennessee State, where he was the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, to help straighten out Garcia.
Garcia had battled his own alcohol and other problems.
Perhaps now we may have insight that Garcia did not exactly have the best mentor to help him with his alcohol issues.
At an earlier time, Mangus had been a backup quarterback and staffer under Spurrier at Florida. He was considered one of the top recruiters in the country, but now he has a different face to project: a mugshot.
This is not the way Spurrier had hoped to begin what could be South Carolina's most promising season.
