College Football 2011: The 14 Best-Dressed College Coaches
With Jim Tressel's unceremonious resignation from Ohio State, one of college football's best dressed coaches is gone...and so is the sweater vest.
Tressel was clean cut and appeared to be one of the game's classiest. But we now know better.
Most coaches come out in a coach's polo shirt and khakis. Others want to look good.
So who does that leave on the list of best-dressed college football coaches?
Take a look and you'll see.
14. Charlie Strong, Louisville
1 of 14
Okay, there's nothing overly special about Charlie Strong's wardrobe.
He wears the requisite Dri-FIT shirt and tennis shoes, but there's not many coaches out there who make it look as good as Strong.
He's also one of the few active coaches who looks like he could still play the game.
13. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State
2 of 14
Mike Gundy has the slicked up hair and those steely eyes, but there's more to him than this.
When you get to wear black you just look cooler than everyone else.
Gundy may not be single, but he looks ready to mingle.
12. Gene Chizik, Auburn
3 of 14
Gene Chizik doesn't do anything extra special; in fact, most college football coaches aren't especially dapper on the sidelines.
But Chizik looks a little better than all of the other polo-wearing, khaki-clad coaches because he's sporting the most recent championship ring.
11. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina
4 of 14
Steve Spurrier made the visor famous, and he's still rocking it well into his 60's.
He looks like he's ready to play 18 at Augusta, but when he slams the visor to the ground, you know exactly what he's there to do—coach some football.
Spurrier has a classic look.
10. Bill Stewart, West Virginia
5 of 14
Bill Stewart is the redneck version of Jim Tressel.
He wears the sweater vest, but it doesn't fit as well as Tressel, and he always wears that long-sleeve shirt with it.
Still, it's a better look than many other coaches.
9. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
6 of 14
Bob Stoops is smooth on the sidelines, and he has adopted Steve Spurrier's visor look.
If Mack Brown wasn't such a sloppy dresser, he'd occupy this spot. Instead, Stoops gets this position as sort of an elder statesman in the game.
8. Rick Neuheisel, UCLA
7 of 14
Rick Neuheisel's return to his alma mater hasn't gone as well as anyone had hoped.
But the laid back, guitar-picking coach is still a fashion statement.
The ladies like him, but for some reason the recruits are staying away from him and UCLA.
At least he's finally on a list that isn't bad news.
7. Dave Christensen, Wyoming
8 of 14
Dave Christensen fits the part in Wyoming; his looks are rugged, and he doesn't try to be someone he's not with his wardrobe.
A Cowboys ball cap, some sweet Oakleys and a turtle neck.
Dude, he's ready to do some coaching.
6. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame
9 of 14
Brian Kelly does the best job of mixing and matching his Notre Dame pullovers.
One week it is a white one, then the next it is a green pullover. Of course, there is the gold and blue that works just fine too.
Kelly doesn't wear a tie, but he still looks good on the sidelines.
5. Nick Saban, Alabama
10 of 14
Nick Saban doesn't dress like this on the sidelines, but the best coach in the game looks sharp when he shows up.
He looks more like a Wall Street-type than the coach at Alabama.
Looking good, coach.
4. Al Golden, Miami
11 of 14
Al Golden played for Joe Paterno at Penn State, and he loved to wear a tie while walking the sidelines at Temple.
With the humidity of South Florida, it might be time for Golden to retire the tie—not likely though.
Now that's he's leading the Hurricanes, Golden will just switch the color of his ties.
3. Mario Cristobal, FIU
12 of 14
There must be something about South Florida and sharp-dressed coaches.
Mario Cristobal is just auditioning for a higher-profile job, but the former Miami Hurricanes player wants everyone to know he's serious about his craft.
But is Cristobal the best-dressed coach in Florida?
2. Joe Paterno, Penn State
13 of 14
The old man may fall asleep during team meetings and hasn't left campus to recruit in more than a decade, but Joe Paterno still dresses as well as almost any coach in the game.
The highly-hemmed slacks, black shoes and white socks are his trademark.
But Paterno almost always wears a tie and sweater on the sidelines.
He has class.
1. Howard Schnellenberger, FAU
14 of 14
Howard Schnellenberger has owned this title since he coached at Miami in the early 1980's.
It was still his when he was with Oklahoma and Louisville.
Even at FAU Schnellenberger remains the top dog.
Schnellenberger loves to smoke a pipe, wear pink shirts and even bow ties.
Hey, the pocket square is a special touch. Is that thing for blowin' or for showin'?
