Torrance Gibson Suspended: Latest Details and Reaction on Ohio State WR
Ohio State redshirt freshman wide receiver Torrance Gibson has been suspended for violating the university's student code of conduct.
Ohio State announced Gibson's suspension for the fall semester on Monday, per Tim Shoemaker of 11 Warriors. Head coach Urban Meyer later told reporters he "disagrees" with the suspension, saying the call was not made by the athletic department.
Jordan Strack of WTOL-11, citing a source, reported Gibson was suspended after a former tutor accused him of harassment. The team appealed the suspension and lost. Strack noted the Buckeyes "fought it hard" and are "adamant [Gibson] did nothing wrong."
A redshirt freshman, Gibson was part of Ohio State's stellar 2015 recruiting class as a dual-threat quarterback. He was rated as a 4-star prospect and the No. 6 athlete in the nation, per 247Sports' composite rankings, during his senior year in high school.
Since the Buckeyes were overcrowded at quarterback last season with Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett getting playing time, Gibson switched positions to become a wide receiver in hopes of getting on the field quicker.
However, per Steve Helwagen of 247Sports, Gibson battled an ankle injury and some off-field issues that led to the Buckeyes redshirting him in 2015.
Meyer told reporters after a win over Penn State last October that Gibson didn't dress for that game as the result of poor grades, per Patrick Maks of the Sun-Sentinel.
Before his suspension, Gibson was likely going to play at least a small role for the Buckeyes in 2016 after Michael Thomas and Braxton Miller moved to the NFL.
Ohio State isn't lacking for depth at wide receiver with Noah Brown, Corey Smith, Curtis Samuel and Parris Campbell returning. It's just an unfortunate distraction for one of the nation's best teams with the season starting Saturday against Bowling Green.
