Which College Football Teams Dominated JUCO Signing Day?

Wednesday was national signing day for mid-year transfer junior college football recruits, and when the ink dried, several colleges ended the day with athletes who could instantly help their respective programs.

Here are a few notes from Wednesday's signing day.

Arizona State signs a half-dozen from JUCO ranks

You'll have to excuse the smile on Arizona State coach Todd Graham's face. The Sun Devils were a big winner on Wednesday, receiving national letters of intent from six JUCO athletes.

Arguably the biggest name of the six was J'Marcus Rhodes, a 6'3", 195-pound, 4-star cornerback from Kilgore (Texas) College. Rhodes is the nation's top-ranked JUCO cornerback and the No. 14 overall player.

Two additional top-25 players signed to Arizona State include hybrid, 3-star defensive ends Koron Crump from Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College and Christian Hill from Glendale (California) Community College. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 3-star cornerback Maurice Chandler and the 3-star offensive linemen tandem of Ventura (California) College's Tyson Rising and City College of San Francisco's A.J. McCollum also submitted their letters of intent.

"We had some needs to fill, especially on the O-line and in the secondary, losing four starters or contributors in each group," said Graham, courtesy of Arizona State. "The two guys we got on the O-line [Rising and McCollum] and the two guys in the secondary [Rhodes and Chandler] are immediate impact guys.

"Being able to come in mid-year gives us spring ball to learn the playbook. And then, you can never have enough pass-rushers, and the two we got [Crump and Hill] can impact the quarterback. Overall, we feel we met most our needs and, along with a few key pieces in February, will finish with a very impactful class."

No. 1 player headed to Alabama

Alabama isn't a stranger to landing the cream of the crop during signing day. Wednesday was no different, as the Crimson Tide signed offensive tackle Charles Baldwin, the nation's top-ranked JUCO player.

At 6'5" and 305 pounds, Baldwin can play both tackle positions, and with Dominick Jackson a senior, there could be an immediate opportunity for him to see time at right tackle opposite left tackle Cam Robinson.

"They were telling me they want me to come in and contribute right way, and the fact I'm coming in as an early enrollee is really going to help," Baldwin told Drew Champlin of AL.com. "I think it's a good chance I'll play early as long as I work hard and buy into the system. That's what the coaches are telling me, and that's what I plan on doing."

Baldwin, from Windsor, Connecticut, was a standout lineman at Asa College in New York City.

Tennessee welcomes three, hoping for No. 1 strong-side defensive end

Tennessee coach Butch Jones received three letters of intent Wednesday from players who will give the team a jolt for the 2016 season in 4-star defensive tackle Alexis Johnson, 3-star receiver Jeff George and 3-star cornerback D.J. Henderson.

All three athletes are ranked among the top-50 JUCO players nationally in the 2016 class. Jones and his staff, however, are hoping to complete the recruiting class in February with a letter of intent from Jonathan Kongbo, the nation's No. 1 strong-side defensive end and No. 2 overall player.

Kongbo, from British Columbia, Canada, wasn't expected to sign as a mid-year JUCO transfer, but he remains committed to the Volunteers. Jones and his staff will have to hold off interested schools such as Washington, Ole Miss, Auburn and others.

Thompson to boost Florida's stacked RB group

Florida's running back depth chart got even more interesting Wednesday with the signing of the nation's No. 3 overall player, Dodge City (Kansas) Community College 4-star running back Mark Thompson

Thompson, an All-American back who rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns, will join 1,000-yard rusher Kelvin Taylor—assuming he doesn't declare for the NFL draft—in the backfield. Also expected to compete for starter's minutes are sophomores-to-be Jordan Scarlett and Jordan Cronkrite.

Thompson was one of three mid-year JUCO transfers to sign with Florida, joining 3-star receiver/athlete Dre Massey and 3-star Eddy Pineiro, the nation's top-ranked JUCO kicker.

"I thought we had great momentum, great headway as we're moving forward in this,'' Florida coach Jim McElwain said during a Wednesday press conference. "Obviously renewed interest and excitement about guys being Gators. That's what it's all about. We're really excited about that."

The next Cam? Virginia Tech hopes so

Justin Fuente signed his first commit as new Virginia Tech head coach—and it was a big one in Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College quarterback Jerod Evans.

The nation's top-ranked dual-threat JUCO quarterback, Evans brings an impressive resume to Blacksburg. The 6'4", 225-pound athlete scored 61 combined touchdowns via the pass or the run in his time at Trinity Valley. His play was enough for his JUCO coach to make a bold comparison.

"He’s the best thing this league has seen since you-know-who came through here," Trinity Valley coach Brad Smiley told Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.com —"you-know-who" being Cam Newton, who played for Blinn College in 2009 and led the Buccaneers to a JUCO national championship before moving on and having great success at Auburn.

Evans' numbers were blistering during the 2015 season. He threw for 3,164 yards and 38 touchdowns and only threw three interceptions. He also rushed for 414 yards and four touchdowns. Trinity Valley averaged 656.1 yards and 57.2 points per game.

Gamecocks get rising CB in King

The Will Muschamp era is underway for South Carolina, and the Gamecocks got better on defense when 4-star cornerback Jamarcus King verbally committed and signed Wednesday morning.

King, the nation's No. 2 JUCO cornerback, was an all-conference and All-American athlete at Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kansas. King, from Prichard, Alabama, chose South Carolina over offers from Tennessee, Baylor, Auburn and a host of other programs.

Muschamp's hiring of former Auburn secondary coach Travaris Robinson as his defensive coordinator seemed to aid in the decision for King, an athlete who didn't play cornerback exclusively until junior college.

"I feel like I can fit in," King told The State. "He [Muschamp] and T-Rob [Robinson] have been together for a long time, and I feel like they can get something going. Coach Robinson is a great coach, great personality and he's a super personality."
