On Tuesday, first-year Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh added to the build-up surrounding "The Game" by smashing an actual buckeye in front of Bo Schembechler's grave. Schembechler was an assistant coach for the Buckeyes before becoming a head coach at Miami (Ohio) and later Michigan from 1969–1989.
Now the focus shifts toward the game. The Buckeyes' 17-14 loss to Michigan State last week means the Spartans are in control of the Big Ten East. But if they falter against Penn State, the winner of Saturday's clash between 10-1 Ohio State and 9-2 Michigan advances to the conference title game versus undefeated Iowa.
The stakes should create an electric atmosphere inside the Big House for the first meeting in the rivalry between Harbaugh and Urban Meyer. Overall, there have been 111 games between the two schools, with Michigan leading the all-time series 58–47–6.
