20 College Football Stadiums You Shouldn't Wear a Road Jersey To

David LutherJun 7, 2018

College football fans around the nation show their love for Dear Old U by hitting the road with the team, and proudly showing up in their alma mater's colors in hostile territory.

While for much of the nation, for much of the season that's not an issue, there are a few locales around the country where showing up in your favorite football jersey will be more than frowned up.

Rather than wearing the trusty old jersey, perhaps a low-key neutral color would work better in any of the stadiums on our list of 20 college football stadiums to which you shouldn't wear a road jersey.

Colorado

1 of 20

We'll get things started with a trip to a school almost universally known for its rude behavior.

After years of existing at or near the bottom of most Big 12 lists of civility, Buffs fans now have a whole new conference to offend. But when you go to school at a college known for its party atmosphere in a town like Boulder, which provides plenty of opportunity for fun, and your football team is absolutely no good, you have to find some way to get your kicks.

Michigan State

2 of 20

Any visiting fan to East Lansing will know why MSU lands on this list the very moment they enter the stadium.

As soon as as opposing fan appears in the stands, a cacophony of jeers rains down upon them, and the surrounding fans begin chanting “a**hole” while pointing at the fan who dares support the “other team.”

The way Spartans fans behave, you would think they have been dominating the Big Ten forever, not just their brief existence at the top these past two seasons.

Nebraska

3 of 20

Nebraska fans felt the harsh sting of reality this past season when it became painfully obvious that the perennial Big 12-North powerhouse was having more than a spot of trouble in their new conference home in the Big Ten.

After embarrassingly lopsided losses to Michigan and Wisconsin combined with a disappointing upset at the hands of Northwestern, Nebraska fans had to bite their tongues.

That won't last long.

The Sea of Red is simultaneously one of the coolest and most obnoxious things in college football. If Nebraska fans could just learn to focus on the future of their program rather than the glory days gone by thanks to, in their minds, the greatest football players ever born, Nebraska might find itself at the bottom of any ranking of rude or obnoxious fan bases.

But show up to a Nebraska game wearing any other color than red, and you'll soon find yourself the unlucky target of some of the worst taunting around.

Oregon

4 of 20

Oregon fans are well known for being some of the loudest in the nation, but that's not their only claim to fame.

While Oregon's climb to national prominence is relatively new, the stories about the relentless verbal abuse of visiting fans is not. From questioning the parentage of opposing fans to hurling profanities anyone dressed in the “wrong” colors, the crowd at Autzen can be counted amongst the most abusive in the nation.

Wisconsin

5 of 20

Attending a game at Camp Randall is one of the special things that exists in college football. The atmosphere is second to none, and with the success the Badgers have enjoyed under Bret Bielema, it doesn't appear that Wisconsin will be sliding down the rankings of game day atmospheres anytime soon.

But Wisconsin's exuberance also frequently spills over into the realm of behavior that could only very generously be described as discourteous to visitors.

From the well known rumors of snowballs containing more than just snow to downright anger directed at opposing fans after the rare home loss, Wisconsin can really make Madison an uncomfortable place for non-Wisconsin fans.

Miami (FL)

6 of 20

Miami's history of seemingly classless behavior has become legendary, and even seems to extend to the program itself, based on the allegations made by sleazeball Nevin Shapiro this past off-season.

But even before any of us knew that silly little man was, we knew about the reputation of “The U,” or as some had come to call it, “Thug U.”

Getting off the plane in fatigues and walking out on a pregame meal with the other team is one thing, but add in the recent lack of living up to expectations, and you have the perfect recipe for a fan base eager to take out its frustration on whomever crosses its path.

While we don't expect Miami fans to be particularly happy about their program's performance over the past few years or its well-earned reputation for breaking just about every rule the NCAA has, it has to be embarrassing to fail to outpace even Florida's 1.6 percent “politeness” factor.

In that same 2009 Sports Illustrated poll, fellow ACC fans gave Miami and 0.8 percent rating.

Oklahoma

7 of 20

Oklahoma is a big program with eons of winning tradition.

Given those facts, we can almost understand the utter rudeness flying around Norman, given the fact that OU has fallen completely flat this past decade when it comes to BCS runs.

Sure, Oklahoma fans love to point to the 2011 Fiesta Bowl victory as a sign that the Sooners aren't cursed when it comes to the BCS, but beating Connecticut isn't exactly anything to write home about.

Add in the fact that there's really nothing else to do in the state of Oklahoma other than live and die for the Sooners, and you begin to understand the psyche of a fan base that can't seem to separate pride in their program from the cockiness they spent a couple generations perfecting.

Michigan

8 of 20

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Michigan probably would have found itself much, much higher on this list.

But after a few humbling years, the fans decked out in bright maize t-shirts seem to have lost much of their venom. After all, who honestly loses to Appalachian State?

Michigan was only too happy to show Rich Rodriguez the door, and Brady Hoke has done more for the Michigan program in one year than Rich Rod could have done in one decade.

Michigan fans aren't known for their vulgarity, and the Big House is surprisingly quiet for those of you who have enjoyed a game there.

But now that Michigan has returned to the BCS, it will be interesting to see how long it takes that legendary arrogance to return.

Florida

9 of 20

Florida's recent fall from grace has more than a few people around the rest of the SEC and entire country feeling a little schadenfreude.

After all, it wasn't all that long ago that the rest of the world was subjected to the relentless onslaught of remarks from Florida fans about how their program was the best program since the game of football was invented.

Even before a visiting fan walked into the stadium, Florida's Tim Tebow fetish was enough to make anyone vomit. Add a little arrogance on top, and all of the sudden, you have a fan base that simply can't believe anyone could ever cheer for a team other than their beloved Gators.

A few years back, Sports Illustrated conducted a poll of college football fans. Under the question about which school had the most polite fans, Florida had an approval rating of 1.6 percent.

Ouch.

Fresno State

10 of 20

The only BCS non-Automatic Qualifying program to make our list is Fresno State, and the Bulldogs fan base shows up for a few very, very good reasons.

In 2002, then-Hawai'i head coach June Jones had a screwdriver thrown at him, which missed and stuck in the turf.

If that wasn't bad enough, Fresno State fans have even taken their bad act on the road, getting into altercations with opposing fans in opposing stadiums!

It takes a special breed of fan to take a road trip out to Hawai'i and end up in an altercation that involved throwing bottles and spitting. If they do that on the road, one can only imagine what takes place at home games.

Tennessee

11 of 20

If your program tumbled from national powerhouse status to SEC laughing stock in the span of less than a decade, you'd be a little cranky, too.

Tennessee fans have a lot to be upset about. The precipitous fall to the the revolving coaching door has built up quite a bit of angst for fans in Tennessee, and they need someone to take it out on. If you're wearing anything but a creamsicle-colored shirt, you'll probably be the target.

You'll also have to put up with constant reminders of Tennessee's glory days gone by, as no Vols fan will ever pass up an opportunity to remind anyone about how great their team used to be.

Texas

12 of 20

For Alabama and LSU fans, Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas should be looked upon not with bemusement, but with caution. All three of these programs were once—recently—at the top of the college football world, and all three came crashing down to earth, rather unexpectedly.

Michigan and Texas are the two programs with the most wins in college football history, and it stands to reason that both of these fan bases are filled with arrogance.

If you grew up in the Lone Star State, you probably grew up as a Texas Longhorns fan (unless you or a family member attended some other Texas university). With that love of Texas comes the belief that anything Texas is immediately bigger and better than anything else anywhere on the planet (just don't remind Texas fans that Michigan has more wins and a bigger stadium).

But twang-talking movie stars roaming the sidelines doesn't really count for much outside of the state of Texas, and any visiting fans to DKR know all too well that putting up with endless reminders of the greatness of UT is just par for the course.

Auburn

13 of 20

When your in-state and arch rivals tend to personify rude and arrogant behavior, most fan bases would take an opposing tack, and try to be everything the hated challenger is not.

Auburn took that theory and turned it completely on its ear.

Rather than trying to show some of the supposedly famous southern hospitality, Auburn fans decided it would be a better use of their efforts to attempt to beat Alabama fans at their own game of discourtesy.

We can all accept hating ones opponent, and Auburn and Alabama certainly exceed at that. But when Auburn plays anyone besides Alabama, the one-upmanship takes over. Alabama fans can at least insulate themselves with the blanket of success. Other fans aren't so lucky.

Southern California

14 of 20

Is anyone really surprised that USC ends up on this list?

Across the entire nation, you'd be hard-pressed to find another fan base more completely arrogant that the Trojan faithful.

USC fans love to point to their seemingly unlimited invitations to the Rose Bowl Game. They also seem to have pretty much every excuse imaginable to explain away the simple fact that Bush cheated and Carroll tried to cover it up.

While USC may not be the most hostile environment in college football (the Trojans rarely sell out home games), any opposing fan knows that one vital piece of equipment is earplugs. How else can you drown out the obnoxious USC fans surrounding you?

Ohio State

15 of 20

Woody Hayes pretty much turned Ohio State into the program it is today, in more ways than one.

Besides winning conference and national titles, Hayes personified arrogance, rudeness and out-of-control aggressiveness.

Beyond “punching” an opposing player in the throat, Hayes had slapped a reported, and had to be restrained from attacking the athletic director of Iowa at a conference meeting.

Is it any wonder he eventually was handed a pink slip?

But in case you weren't sure how the Ohio State faithful regard Hayes to this day, they named a street after him.

Fast forward a few decades, and you have a team that hasn't lost any of the arrogance.

We'll give Ohio State fans a small pass, due mainly to the fact that Columbus is shockingly lacking in professional sports teams, especially for a city that size. But the Buckeye nation is more like a cult than anything else.

And much like any cult, there's not reasoning with its members.

Ohio State fans seem to have no limits, especially when it comes to their arch-nemesis, Michigan. From the Columbus band “Dead Schembechlers” and their aptly-titled but less-than-creative “I Hate Michigan” song to hoping everyone's favorite social pariah Casey Anthony is a Michigan fan, it seems civility can't find any room at Ohio State.

Alabama

16 of 20

Yes, it's back to the SEC (and, no, we're not done with SEC programs on the list).

Nick Saban may be the perfect coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide football program, and not just because he's shown a knack at winning BCS Championships. Saban's attitude towards the media gives the world a glimpse of the Crimson Tide psyche. Why should any Alabama coach have to answer any questions from the lowly media outlets that faithfully cover the Tide?

Taking a cue from their coach, the Tide fans take it one step further. Why should they give the time of day to anyone not a fan of the Crimson Tide? After all, what else is there in the world besides Alabama football?

If anyone needs any evidence that Tide fans take things way too seriously at times, look no further than the fact that one misguided Alabama fan took it upon himself to try and destroy one of the great traditions of college football.

Seriously, who poisons a tree?

While even the president of the University of Alabama—much to his credit—scorned Harvey Updyke, Jr., and the moronic, despicable act he committed, it is probably safe to say that he wasn't the only Alabama fan fantasizing about bringing down those famous trees in Auburn.

Texas Tech

17 of 20

While Texas easily takes the cake for the most arrogant fans in the state of Texas, Texas Tech fans outpace their cousins from Austin in the rudeness category.

Texas Tech fans seem to have taken their boorish behavior to a whole new level recently. It really takes a special brand of rudeness to vandalize a bus with feces.

Tech fans even once threw the goalposts into a section of visiting fans. Yes, the goalposts. And, yes, thrown. That by itself is enough to get Texas Tech on this list.

West Virginia

18 of 20

West Virginia fans belong in a class all by themselves.

Aside from being some of the more passionate fans of their particular team (because there's not much else to do in them hills), fans of the Mountaineers have combined that with their own unique blend of “Appalachian classy.”

Burning couches and maligning a former coach for taking a better-paying job at a bigger program (why on Earth would anyone do that?) are one thing, but WVU fans have actually been accused of assaulting visiting fans after a game.

Stay classy, West Virginia.

Louisiana State

19 of 20

You can't have any list of college football stadiums to avoid in a road jersey without mentioning LSU.

While the Tigers have some of the most passionate fans in the nation, they also have some of the most obnoxious fans.

Sports Illustrated found that 32.2 percent of SEC respondents listed LSU as having the stadium with the rudest fans. That beat out second-place Florida by a full 13 percent. LSU also scored particularly low when SEC fans were asked about the stadiums with the most polite fans. Only 2.5 percent said LSU.

Beyond the rudeness, you have to mix in a little Texas or Michigan-level arrogance to go along with it. Spending a day in Baton Rouge with a jersey any color other than purple and yellow is a truly harrowing experience.

Penn State

20 of 20

Penn State's Beaver Stadium is a special place, and it's amazing to see during a “white out” game.

But when your university has to adopt a resolution denouncing “negative cheering,” you know you have a bit of a problem on your hands.

While the resolution against negative cheering may have cleaned up the foul-mouthed student section, the administration forgot to mention that throwing objects probably isn't a good substitute. Oops.

According to a 2011 GQ article, Penn State fans have tossed everything from snowballs and small shrubs to bottles filled with urine.

Awesome.

The part that really takes the cake? The YouTube video (also referenced in the GQ article) that depicts Penn State fans cheering as a few throw full beer cans at the heads of passing Ohio State fans.

According to the GQ article, “Video of that assault was proudly posted on YouTube, tagged as 'comedy.'”

Not to Nittany Lions fans: that's not funny. Not even a little bit.

Congratulations, Penn State. You've just topped our list of stadiums to which you shouldn't wear a road jersey.
