Is Glen Coffee Going Pro?

Glen Coffee announced that he has submitted his papers to the NFL advisory committee today.  My first response was sheer silence—I didn't know what to think. I believe he is a great running back and more importantly, an NFL-style RB.

He makes good decisions, choosing his cutback lanes very carefully, and has great explosion through the gaps the O-Line creates for him. He also has great breakaway speed when he gets into the defensive backfield. One of the things I like most about him is his ability to catch the ball on the run, and he blocks better than any other starting RB in the SEC in my opinion.

If Bama were to lose him to the NFL, I believe it would greatly hurt the team. The offense would lose a lot of talent and experience needed to make another run at the SEC Championship game. He is one of the biggest reasons our team has turned around. He dedicated and sacrificed his body in key situations throughout the year to keep drives alive.

On the other hand, I wouldn't blame him if he left for a future in the NFL. Opportunities are slim in today's economy, and next year there will be a salary cap on future NFL first round picks that will limit the amount of money a player can make. It will also limit the amount of money that is guaranteed.

That being said, I am sure there are a lot of juniors considering that very same thing, which could not be good for Coffee. Because he didn't have the really big stats that some of the others have had, it would be easy for him to be overlooked. I do believe he is going to be a great RB—I just don't know if the NFL advisory committee will give him the news he is wanting to hear this year.

I think very highly of Coffee and am glad to have had the privilege of watching him play. I hope and pray that whatever decision he makes is best for him, his faith, and his family.
