College Football: Power Ranking Top 10 Wide Receivers After 12 Weeks

William PenfieldNov 16, 2011

Week 12 of the college football season was probably the most exciting yet with the No. 4 and No. 5 teams in the country falling.

Another week of college football was also another week of outstanding performances from the nations top wide outs, perhaps none better than Patrick Edward's, of Houston, performance.

In the Cougars 73-17 win over Tulane, Edwards caught five balls for 129 yards and three touchdowns, but didn't stop there. He added a 70 yard punt return for a touchdown as well.

See where Edwards lands in this weeks installment of the wide receiver power rankings.

Disclaimer: This is based on on-field performance in the 2011 season. (I understand Alshon Jeffrey and Michael Floyd will both be first round picks in the NFL Draft but they have not had one of the 10 best seasons thus far in college football.

Honorable Mention

1 of 11

Jarius Wright, Arkansas (I've been writing this dude off for a while, but he had the catch of the year against Tennessee on Saturday)

Alshon Jeffrey, South Carolina

Michael Floyd, Notre Dame

Kendall Wright, Baylor

Marquess Wilson, Washington State

A.J. Jenkins, Illinois

No. 10 Keenan Allen

2 of 11

Keenan Allen started off the season fast but has cooled off lately, apparent by his latest performance against Oregon State.

On Saturday, Allen caught just three ball for 29 yards without a score.

It marked his third straight game without a touchdown and his fourth straight game in which he failed to reach 100 yards receiving.

Allen is hanging on by a thread to his Top 10 status and will likely fall out with another subpar performance this week.

On the season, Allen has 78 passes for 1,103 yards and five touchdowns.

No. 9 Marvin McNutt

3 of 11

Marvin McNutt was in my honorable mention in last weeks power rankings, but a standout performance against Michigan State has launched him into the Top 10.

In Iowa's 37-21 loss to the Spartan's, McNutt caught eight balls for 130 yards and a score.

He has over 100 yards receiving in all but three of the Hawkeye's games in 2011 and currently sits with 65 receptions, 1,089 yards and 10 touchdowns.

McNutt has been one bright spot in the disappointing season for the Hawkeyes.

No. 8 Nick Harwell

4 of 11

An amazing performance by Nick Harwell of Miami (Ohio) against Temple last week cemented his spot in the Top 10 this week.

In the Redhawks 24-21 loss to Temple, Harwell caught 15 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns.

In a rather dismal season for Miami (Ohio), Harwell has been one bright spot.

He has racked up 69 catches for 1,124 yards and five touchdowns to this point in 2011 without catching a single pass in the teams opening game against Missouri.

No. 7 Sammy Watkins

5 of 11

For much of the season Sammy Watkins has been one of the top wide outs in the nation, but a shoulder injury slowed him down in Saturday's game against Wake Forest.

Watkins caught five balls for 62 yards without a score in Clemson's 31-28 victory over the Demon Deacons.

In 2011, Watkins has totaled 68 receptions for 1,034 yards and 10 scores as Tajh Boyd's No. 1 target on one of the ACC's best teams.

The Tigers will need Watkins back healthy if they want a chance to knock off Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship, the likely matchup for the conference title.

No. 6 Mohamed Sanu

6 of 11

With another impressive performance on Saturday against Army, Mohamed Sanu broke the all-time Big East receptions record for a season, formerly held by Larry Fitzgerald.

Sanu caught 13 balls for 129 yards on Saturday in the 27-12 victory.

On the season, Sanu has totaled 94 receptions for 973 yards and seven touchdowns. He is one of the few standout play makers in the dismal Big East football conference.

No. 5 Ryan Broyles

7 of 11

Even though Ryan Broyles is sidelined for the rest of the season, he has already put up an impressive enough season to keep him in the Top 10 for the time being.

Broyles has caught 83 passes for 1,157 yards and 10 touchdowns in the 2011 season.

As a senior it is really a shame to see one of the nations top wide outs go down for the rest of the year

No. 4 Robert Woods

8 of 11

Robert Woods of USC put together one of the most disappointing performances of the season on Saturday.

In the Trojans 40-17 win, Woods caught just two passes for five yards.

Luckily for him, he had put together one of the most impressive seasons of the nations wide outs before Saturday to keep him ranked so high.

On the season, Woods has 92 catches for 1,126 yards and 11 touchdowns, and has been Matt Barkley's No. 1 target.

No. 3 Patrick Edwards

9 of 11

Although he does benefit from Houston's pass happy offense led by Case Keenum, it is impossible to ignore what Patrick Edwards has accomplished this season.

He put together one of the more impressive efforts of the season on Saturday with five catches for 129 yards and three touchdowns to go along with a 70 yard punt return for a TD.

On the season, Edwards has totaled 61 receptions for 1,277 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is second in the nation in yards and tied with Justin  Blackmon for the most touchdowns.

No. 2 Jordan White

10 of 11

Jordan White has put together a highly impressive season for the Western Michigan Bronco's despite missing the first game of the season against Michigan.

In the Bronco's 66-63 loss to Toledo last week, White caught 16 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns.

He currently leads the nation in both yards, with 1,283, and receptions, with 99, and is second in touchdowns with 12.

If not for the man who has reigned king of wide receivers for most of the season, White would find himself in the No. 1 spot.

No. 1 Justin Blackmon

11 of 11

Once again, Justin Blackmon reigns king of wide outs after another impressive performance on Saturday as the duo of himself and Brandon Weeden seems unstoppable.

In Oklahoma State's 66-6 win over Texas Tech, Blackmon caught six balls for 103 yards and two touchdowns, which would have been much more had the Cowboys needed it.

The sure fire first round pick has totaled 93 catches on the season for 1,142 yards and 14 touchdowns.

His 14 touchdowns are good for best in the country.

Check out last weeks rankings here and be sure to check back each Wednesday for the new power rankings. Take care.
