Alabama Football: Why There's Just Too Many Road Blocks for a Title Shot

Following a home loss to No. 1 LSU, Alabama only fell one spot back to No. 3, so there appears to be a very real chance that the Tide can force a rematch with the Tigers in the national championship game.

But as Lee Corso would say, “not so fast, my friend.”

Obviously the first thing Alabama would have to do is win the rest of its games, and that is not guaranteed. The toughest test will be against Auburn, and while the Tigers aren’t that great this year, a rivalry game isn’t always won by the most talented team.

The Tide jumped out to an early lead against Auburn last year but ended up blowing it in the second half. If Gene Chizik has his players ready to play against one of the best defenses in the country, the game could turn into an upset.

Then you have to account for the fact that Alabama won’t be playing in the final week of the season. While most everyone else in the Top 10 will be playing on December 3rd, the Tide will be back in Tuscaloosa waiting to see the BCS Standings the following day.

That is also the day that Oklahoma plays Oklahoma State and that could have huge repercussions in the national title race.

But perhaps the most important thing to consider is whether or not the voters really want a rematch of a game lost by the home team. Maybe if LSU had lost or the game had been played in Baton Rouge, the perception would be different, but winning at home should be easier. If you can’t do it there, why should the BCS allow a rematch?

Odds are that there will be at least one more undefeated team at the end of the season, and when you consider that and all of the other factors going into the BCS, Alabama will have too much to overcome in order to make it to the BCS National Championship.
