Penn State Football: Will ESPN College GameDay Come for Nebraska Game?

Kevin McGuireNov 1, 2011

With two weeks to kill before Penn State's next game, fans are already starting to wonder if they could be seeing those big ESPN trucks rolling into town for the College GameDay Saturday morning broadcast. As long as Nebraska does not lose this weekend, there is a legitimate reasoning behind why GameDay could select Penn State to be the host for the November 12 date.

A quick look at the schedule suggests that the top game that day could be the Stanford vs. Oregon game in the Pac-12. Both the Cardinal and Ducks are ranked in the top 10 of the BCS, Stanford is undefeated and Oregon's lone loss came in the season opener against top-ranked LSU.

GameDay typically airs from the site of the biggest games of the weekend and as long as the Pac-12 powers avoid an upset this weekend, that would make perfect sense for the ESPN gang to make the West Coast trip to Palo Alto, California. GameDay has never broadcast from Stanford's campus.

But they were just there on October 15 for Oregon's game against Arizona State, and this past weekend GameDay aired from Los Angeles for Stanford's road game against USC. Oregon has been featured in two GameDay broadcasts already this season too.

It is not unheard of for GameDay to revisit teams that quickly, but it is not typically their preference, and Nebraska vs. Penn State could be the second-most attractive game on the schedule that weekend.

Given Penn State's 8-1 record and the history and tradition at Penn State and Nebraska, this would almost seem like a no-brainer for ESPN's decision-makers.

Other notable games that weekend include No. 5 Boise State vs. TCU, No. 9 South Carolina vs. Florida, and No. 14 Kansas State vs. Texas A&M. The Pac-12 and Big Ten games already mentioned are the only games with two teams currently ranked facing off each other, and the Penn State-Nebraska game could serve as a Big Ten championship preview.

The last time ESPN College GameDay aired from Penn State was prior to the 2009 game against Iowa. GameDay broadcasted at the site of two Penn State road games in 2010, at Alabama and Ohio State.

GameDay aired from Madison, Wisconsin to highlight Nebraska's game against Wisconsin.

The last time College GameDay visited the same campus twice in the same season was 2007, when they aired from Oregon two separate times.
