BCS Rankings 2011: Who Got Screwed in the Week 9 Standings?
In the BCS, some teams are overrated and others are underrated. Then, there are teams that are just plain screwed over. As a fan, you hate to see teams that deserve more credit get raided of their pride by a bunch of computers, some lousy coaches, and a poll based around the media and former players.ย
As we are just past the middle of the season, the BCS polls become increasingly important, especially to squads that are ranked in or around the Top 10. With two big undefeated powerhouses losing yesterday, this BCS poll is going to influence the rest of the year in a huge way.
Where teams end up now might be one of the last times they really move around, especially if they only face one or two more ranked opponents.ย
The Week 9 BCS rankings have finally arrived, and these are the five teams that received a low blow in the rankings.ย
No. 22 Georgia
1 of 5The No. 22ย Bulldogs are being completely overlooked in the BCS. They may have had a rough start to their season, but since losing to two Top 15 teams by close margins, Mark Richt has his team back on track.ย
Any winning streak over three is difficult in the SEC and Georgia is in the process of pulling off a five game winning segment. After much criticism for losing to Boise State and South Carolina, fans and analysts have ignored the Bulldogs winning prowess.
If they continue on the road they're on, Georgia might be on track to head to the SEC Championship game. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, their regular season does not contain Alabama or LSU, making winning the SEC east more than a possibility.ย
No. 18 Michigan
2 of 5The No. 18 Wolverines are a one-loss team sitting in the bottom half of the rankings. Additionally, their one loss is to Michigan State, a squad that just defeated the former No. 6 team in the nation.
Michigan is run by a Heisman candidate in Denard Robinson and boasts a quick offense who can score quickly. Looking at the new rankings, there are many one loss teams that are ranked much higher than Michigan such as Oregon, OU, Virginia Tech, and Nebraska.
The Wolverines deserve a little more respect from the pollsters, at least deserving to jump into the Top 15.ย
No. 17 Houston
3 of 5In my world, undefeated means undefeated. The Cougars are undefeated and sit all the way back at No. 17.
This is basically how Boise State got its start at being a powerhouse. We ignored their continued success, only to be surprised by them in a BCS Bowl and Houston could pull that same trick sooner or later.
Houston may not be playing the same kind of teams that Boise State faces off against now, but a strong recruiting base and a solid coaching staff may propel this team to a new level. History may repeat itself if coaches, other teams, and the computers blow off another non-AQ squad like No. 17 Houston.ย
No. 15 Wisconsin
4 of 5Let's compare the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers to the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners. They both lost in the same weekend to teams that should not have beaten them by close margins. They both were projected to win their conferences.
That's where the similarities stop and the crazy differences begin.
The Sooners lost to an unranked opponent at home by three points that they were unable to make back up due to a miss by their kicker.
The Badgers, on the other hand, lost to a highly ranked Michigan State team at East Lansing on a last second play that was pure luck by the Spartans.
Oklahoma dropped a grand total of six spots while Wisconsin fell nine ranks in the BCS polls.
It is purely ridiculous. I can not believe that the Badgers got screwed this much by the pollsters as well as the computers. This is the highlight of the article occupied by a team that got screwed the most.ย
No. 10 Arkansas
5 of 5The No. 10 Razorbacks are a one-loss team that getting itself screwed as compared to it's fellow one loss team, No. 7 Oregon. The Ducks moved up above Kansas State and Oklahoma while Arkansas didn't even move. It doesn't make any sense.ย
The Ducks owe their one loss to top ranked LSU while the Razorbacks are stuck with their loss because of the Crimson Tide, which to me are literally the same team till the Nov. 5th game.
Therefore, why isn't Arkansas ranked just as high as Oregon? They are getting screwed out of the possibility of moving any higher than whoever loses the LSU-Alabama game.ย
