BCS Standings 2011: Oklahoma Sooners Suffer Worst Loss in Bob Stoops Era
The Oklahoma Sooners didn't need to worry about the BCS standings until a Dec. 3 showdown with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, but that quickly changed with the worst loss in head coach Bob Stoops' 12-plus years in Norman.
Oddsmakers sent out the then No. 3 team in the BCS standings as overwhelming 29-point home favorites due to playing inside a venue that saw the program tally 39 consecutive wins.
Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium had been a wasteland for opponents, getting outscored by a 1,744-to-570 margin over the course of the streak.
Oklahoma got beat by a better team Saturday night, rallying for 21 points in the final quarter only to drop a 41-38 contest in Big 12 conference play to Texas Tech.
The Sooners allowed the Red Raiders to gain 572 total yards, demonstrating that they were clearly overrated and the second-best team in the state.
Normally, a hangover in college football lasts for just 30 minutes, but that argument went out the window when Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege hit Alex Torres for an 11-yard score with 13:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Doege finished the night completing 33 of 52 passes for 441 yards and four touchdowns, throwing for 29 more yards than Oklahoma's Heisman Trophy candidate Landry Jones.
Stoops entered Week 8 of the season with a 75-2 home record, with the only previous losses coming against the TCU Horned Frogs (17-10) on Sept. 3, 2005 and the Oklahoma State Cowboys (16-13) on Nov. 24, 2001.
The Sooners were 25 and 27.5-point favorites respectively in both losses, rounding out an alarming trend of seemingly inexcusable defeats.
It's cemented by the biggest loss of all—one that will likely keep the program out of the 2012 BCS Championship on Jan. 9, 2012 in New Orleans.
