Brent Calloway Arrest: What's Next for Alabama Running Back

Alabama running back Brent Calloway was arrested on a marijuana charge that won't adversely affect this season for the Crimson Tide, but has crippled Calloway's chances of moving into Alabama's feature back role next season.

Alabama has become a running back factory. Mark Ingram was the feature back, with Trent Richardson as the secondary back. Now, it's Richardson and Eddie Lacy, and next year would have easily been Lacy and Calloway, in no particular order.

Calloway was the No. 5 RB recruit in the nation, according to Rivals.com. With so much promise and Richardson likely headed to the NFL in the first round of next year's draft, 'Bama clearly had big plans for Calloway.

For the time being, whatever suspension or punishment Nick Saben and Alabama lay down on Calloway isn't going to play a part in their national championship hopes, but he's now on very thin ice with the program.

This is a minor infraction, but it's one that Calloway is going to take years for Calloway to distance himself from. One more slip up of any kind makes him a repeat offender. Alabama isn't the type of program that invests in players they can't rely on.

Even if he keeps his nose clean all season long and outperforms Lacy in the offseason, the job is Lacy's now. LSU is battling through adversity because players in key roles were busted on weed charges as well.

Alabama isn't going to risk it by placing all of their eggs in the Calloway basket. He's only a freshman. He's got all the tools to turn his career around and straighten up off the field. Alabama has high hopes for Calloway, but they are far too established to put up with this sort of nonsense.
