College Football Rankings: Kansas State and 3 Teams Who Will Crack Top 25

Kyle VassaloOct 2, 2011

Even five weeks into the season, new teams continue to prove that there are serious Top 25 contenders sitting outside the rankings, while some teams in the rankings prove they've been pretenders all along.

With TCU falling victim to upset yet again and teams like Illinois looking less than impressive this week, we're bound to see newcomers in the Top 25.

Here are three teams who will crack the Top 25 when the new rankings are revealed.

Michigan State

Michigan State proved this week that their loss to Notre Dame may have been an aberration. Taking down Ohio State in The Shoe is a tremendous accomplishment even if the Buckeyes aren't on their "A" Game at the moment.

The Spartans came away with a much-needed victory and have earned the right to reenter the rankings, for the time being at least. They have three ranked opponents in a row coming up on their schedule.

Time will tell whether they'll be exposed again or step up to the plate with everything on the line.

Kansas State

So it's not just a weak schedule that has Kansas State dominating. They stood toe-to-toe with Robert Griffin III and managed to come away with a victory over Baylor, overtaking the Bears as the dangerous Big 12 team nobody wants to play.

The Wildcats are undefeated and have acquired a signature win under their belt prior to getting into the tougher portion of their schedule. This win will be instrumental in boosting their confidence and image, making them a lock to crack the Top 25.

Auburn

Don't look now, but Auburn only has one loss on the season. That loss came against undefeated Clemson on the road and doesn't warrant them being held out of the AP Poll in the slightest.

They now have two wins over ranked opponents and have emerged from Week 5 with a 4-1 record. They're battle tested and though they aren't Cam Newton's 2010 Tigers, they certainly deserve recognition from voters after proving themselves yet again last week.
