Pac-12 Expansion Rejected: What Will Happen to Texas, Oklahoma Next?

Johnathan CaceSep 21, 2011

The presidents of the Pac-12 met last night and decided that the conference would be staying at 12 teams, as reported by the Associated Press.

The ramifications of this decision will be felt throughout the country, but the schools most directly affected by this decision are Texas and Oklahoma.

What exactly will happen next when it comes to these football powerhouses?

The Big-12 Will Stay Together...for Now

1 of 4

This is the best thing that could have happened for both schools. In terms of geography, going to the Pac-12 did not make much sense. These two giants will remain top dogs and won't have to fight against teams like USC or Oregon for dominance.

The reason why this stay is “for now” is because of Oklahoma’s apparent demand to change the leadership of the Big 12. If this is true, the conference must have something already worked out because the Pac-12, the only feasible place for Oklahoma to go, will be staying at 12.

If things don’t get worked out, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State could move west and leave Texas behind, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Don’t worry about that scenario until it actually happens.

Texas Keeps Its Longhorn Network

2 of 4

Staying is particularly great for Texas as they get to keep their Longhorn Network and don’t have to share the revenue with anyone.

The league is essentially "Texas and Friends," with Oklahoma being their best buddy.

The ESPN-managed network is the first of its kind and the enormity of its impact for the Longhorns cannot be understated. Keeping it has to have everyone in Austin very, very happy.

The Red River Rivalry Will Continue

3 of 4

One of the best rivalry games in all of college sports will continue to be played. The Red River Rivalry is a Midwest classic. The game often has huge implications in the Big 12 and sometimes on the national championship race.

College football purists were scared that games like this would fall by the wayside with conference expansion. It looks as though traditions like this have been saved.

OU, Texas Lead Charge for New Schools

4 of 4

BYU, welcome to the Big 12. If Oklahoma is truly staying put, you can bet there will be 12 teams in the Big 12 and not nine or 10.

The Cougars seem like a great fit and would likely accept following an abysmal start to play as an independent school.

The conference would be wise to get TCU on board as well as a team like Louisville, Houston or Boise State. The Big East members are reportedly committed to their conference, but would have to be foolish not to seriously consider an offer from the Big 12.
