As always—a pre-warning.
This is a rant. This is a vent—it may offend, but you know what?
I just don't care.
South Carolina football fans have widely been recognized as some of the greatest and most loyal fans in all of sports. People point to the 0-21 debacle the team had to endure at the beginning of the decade, and how the fans filled the stadium and rooted hard every week. The team has had its ups and downs since 1999-2000, but lately has seen way more ups than downs.
So, why all of a sudden, did the Gamecock fan base become a bunch of whiny, crying, little three-year old girls when it comes to its beloved team?
If you are a fan of the Gamecocks, and really want your blood to boil, check out the State newspapers forum board over at Gamecocks.com.
Suddenly, the 3-0 No. 10 Gamecocks are bashed more than the 6-6 teams of yesteryear.
Suddenly, everyone thinks that they are a better coach than the Head Ball Coach.
Suddenly, everyone is a better quarterback than Stephen Garcia.
Suddenly, the team should be perfect every game.
Suddenly, I am no longer a believe in the Garnet and Black faithful.
Who are these people that are coming out of the woodwork to claim to be Carolina fans and then bash everything that the team does? Does anyone not remember a time when winning the East was pure fantasy, and being the favorite to do so was absurd?
I post things every once in a while on that board, under my screen name aprjem. (My initial's plus my ex wife's—not the best plan in retrospect, but it shows how long I have been a member).
However, because I have not posted 200,000 times, I am labeled a "Tater", or not a true fan. If only they knew about my 350,000 reads on this site and others.
What happened to the supportive and fun environments of yesteryear? I find it hilarious that the Gamecocks start every year with a bang and end with a fizzle.
This year, the team is struggling more than you would like, but are steadily showing signs of improvement. The team beat an angry and desperate Georgia team on the road. Any other year, and people would have been dancing on the street.
Instead, people complain that it was just a 3-point win? Come on now. Give me a break! Who are you?
The team beats a much tougher than anticipated Navy team, and the fans boo the team, and crap on them on the local boards.
This Navy team has a history of keeping games close, and winning 8-10 games per year! This wasn't a little sister of the poor—this was NAVY!!
Now, people (i.e. FANS) are saying Vanderbilt will beat South Carolina!
Really? Where is the confidence? Vanderbilt is much better than anticipated, and could really be a problem team for the Gamecocks, but come on. Waving the white flag already? Before the kickoff? That's never been the Carolina way.
Don't give me the heightened expectations crap. I still have high expectations for this team. However, I know where the Gamecocks come from, and I am aware of where they need to go.
For fans to expect the team to come out and murder everyone—give me a break. Champions take heart, and South Carolina has shown more of it in the last three games than any Gamecock team I have ever seen.
They have the number one (or two) Heisman candidate in Marcus Lattimore, and one of the best freshmen I have ever seen in Jadeveon Clowney.
Oh, and did we mention that the team has started 3-0? Something that has only happened twice in the last ten years? Oh, and if they beat Vandy, they are starting 4-0 for the first time since 2001.
It's great to be a Gamecock—if you don't think so (or act like it), the Clemson bandwagon is heating up after the big win against Auburn—why don't you jump over to that one?
Oh,and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
