Jerry Kill: Minnesota Head Coach Collapses on Sideline After Seizure

Joseph HealySep 10, 2011

There were some frightening moments for everyone involved late in Minnesota's 28-21 loss to New Mexico State Saturday afternoon.

Gophers head coach Jerry Kill collapsed on the sideline as he suffered from an apparent seizure. The situation is certainly scary considering that Kill is a cancer survivor who has a history of seizures. After a play on a potential game-winning drive, the Golden Gophers' coach fell to the turf convulsing while staff gathered around him.

Brian Bennett of ESPN blogged about the situation just after it occurred:

Kill went down with 20 seconds left in the game with what appeared to be a seizure. Kill had suffered two seizures on the sidelines during previous coaching stops. The game was stopped for several minutes as players gathered in prayers.

"

John Taylor of College Football Talk went into more detail about Kill's history with seizures:

"In 2005, Kill had a seizure on the sidelines while he was head coach at Southern Illinois.  The Big Ten Network announcers hinted that may have been the cause of the issue, although nothing has been confirmed at the time of this posting."

Thankfully, Kill seems to be doing alright in the aftermath.

The CBS College Sports college football blog Twitter page broke news on his condition immediately afterward:

"Jerry Kill has reportedly suffered a seizure but is in stable condition."

ESPN further updated Kill's status, reporting that Kill's vital signs were normal, and that dehydration and the 90-degree heat may have been a cause.

Minnesota team doctor Pat Smith told reporters after the game that coach Kill had a seizure history which had been well controlled through medication.

"

"We were able to give him medicine to sedate him," Dr. Smith said, "And he was at no time under any risk in any way. He was breathing, his vital signs were normal, and he responded typically of a person recovering from a seizure."

"

Kill was hospitalized after examination, and will likely be kept at the hospital overnight for observation.
