After an incredibly disappointing 3-9 season in 2010, the Duke Blue Devils look to finally turn the corner and get this program bowl-eligible.

Here, I will go through position by position and grade each unit of the defense.

From the linemen to the defensive backs, each unit is equally important to assuring a successful 2011 campaign.

Overall Defense: C-

With the skill of Duke’s offense, the defense needs to step up their efforts in 2011.

The defense gave up more than 35 points per game in 2010, a number that will need to dramatically decrease.

I expect Duke's defense to take a step in the right direction.

Only baby steps, but steps none the less.

Defensive Line: C-

Duke’s defensive line is just plain bad.

They bring back both starting interior linemen, but considering how bad they were last season, is that necessarily a good thing?

New starters Kenny Anunike and Justin Foxx will be the new defensive ends and hope to change the style of play.

Linebackers: D+

Unfortunately, Duke’s linebackers aren’t much better than their defensive line.

Only starter Kelby Brown returns from last season, and two new players will take the other linebacker spots. Both jobs are being battled for this offseason, but all indications are Austin Gamble and August Campbell will be getting the jobs.

Secondary: B-

Duke’s secondary is the one bright part of the defense.

With how poor the front-seven looks to be, senior leader Matt Daniels will need a great season in 2011.

With Daniels and Lee Butler providing deep coverage, shutting down short passes and the run game will be key for Duke in 2011.
