Boston College Football: Breaking Down the Defense in 2011

After a 7-6 season that ended in the Emerald Bowl against the University of Nevada, Boston College looks to transition into 2011 and try winning the ACC.

Here, I will go through position by position and grade each unit of the defense.

From the linemen to the defensive backs, each unit is equally important in assuring a successful 2011 campaign.

Overall Defense: B

The Boston College defense has been the staple of this team since Matt Ryan's graduation, often being what has carried the team.

This year the Eagles only bring back five starters from a unit that held teams to 19.5 points per game.

Will this defense be even better in 2011?

It will be close.

Defensive Line: C+

The D-line is easily BC’s weakest position, be it offense or defense.

With three starters gone from last season, there will be a lot of new faces up front. Senior Kaleb Ramsey will need to be leader of this unit and keep the Eagles dominant in the trenches.

This unit will be average, but not great.

Linebackers: A

Now, Eagles fans, here is the unit we’re all ready to watch.

Led by one of the best linebackers in the country, Luke Kuechly, this unit will be one of the best in Eagles history.

The loss of captain Mark Herzlich will be difficult, but this team has plenty of talent to step in and succeed right away.

Secondary: B

The Eagles look to have another strong secondary in 2011, but they will have to replace both of their starting safeties from last season. Stepping in are senior Dominick LeGrande and junior Okechuckwu Okoroha.

The Eagles still have a battle for their final cornerback spot opposite shut-down corner Donnie Fletcher.
