Alabama Deals with Gunner Kiel Loss by Turning Up Heat on Greyson Lambert
During a recent summer camp for high school students at the University of Alabama, Greyson Lambert, from Jessup, Georgia, came in and left coaches open-mouthed with his zinging tight spirals and big 6'5'', 210-pound frame.
Though Rivals doesn't even have him ranked nationally and he was only rated as the 28th-best in the state of Georgia, the coaches really liked what they saw in this pro-style passer.
The Alabama coaches had seem him last year and thought he may have potential, but this year they were amazed in the amount of progress he's made in a year.
Jim McElwain liked what he saw and told the young man that.
He has an offer from Alabama and now with Gunner Kiel, the nation's No. 1 pro-style passer having chosen Indiana over Alabama, the heat may be turned up on the recruiting of Lambert.
Not only were they impressed with the accuracy of his ultra tight spirals, but the physical shape he turned up to the campus in. Last year he was a tall but skinny boy and this year had filled out to just over 210 pounds and looked like the kind of quarterback ready to take a hit in the SEC.
Also impressive was Lambert's quick recovery from injuries from simply training too hard this spring. Lambert suffered a leg injury from training too hard. He was surprised to hear the diagnosis of a stress fracture in his left leg that affected his ability to pivot on his feet and throw.
He was on crutches for nearly 10 weeks, missing all of Wayne County’s spring football practice and coaches at Alabama thought that he may still be somewhat hampered by that injury. He wasn't hampered in the least.
This scored him high marks for his training regimen, even if it did cause him an injury. Coaches saw a young man ready and willing to push himself to the limits. His fast recovery time proved also to be a plus.
Right now his favorites are Alabama, Cincinnati, Arkansas, LSU, Michigan and Virginia. He has a July 30th trip planned to visit Virginia and then says he will sit down with his family and make a choice so he can concentrate on his senior season at Wayne County High School.
But Florida may be sneaking into the picture. Last week in a Friday Night Lights event at the Swamp in Gainesville, he also impressed the coaches there and many think an offer is soon to come from Florida, and it is an offer that Lambert finds intriguing.
Greyson says that he is only considering schools with a pro-style offense and feels his skill set is best suited for that type of offense.
He said he has been watching the Alabama Crimson Tide for a while now and has been coming there a lot and feels comfortable with the school, coaches and, most importantly, the offense.
Though Lambert is only a three-star prospect, keep in mind that Mark Ingram was too at this time in his high school career and we all know how that worked out.
Nick Saban has never been afraid to use his and his coaches outlook on a particular player rather than believing in what a recruiting source says. So far, Saban hasn't been wrong very many times.
Look for a decision by Greyson as early as next week. Should he pull the string for Alabama, look for Alabama to quit any more recruiting for a 2012 quarterback, they like what they've seen in this young man.
